Description of Setting

Mandarin’s Daughter ~ Wise, modest, helpful, is the real reason the villages eventually came to peace; flat and dynamic; Characterized through her other character’s opinions of her and her actions.

Mandarin of Kwan-Si ~ ambitious, much like first Mandarin but they do not get along; flat and dynamic; characterized through other characters opinions of him, his effect on other characters, and his actions.

Summary● The mandarin of Kwan-Si changes his town’s formation into a pig.● The mandarin thinks of this as a pig eating an orange, which is their

town. He decides to change his town’s formation into a club to drive the pig away.

● Both mandarin’s continued to direct the stonemasons to change the shape of their towns.

● The towns and mandarins become sick and famished.● The mandarin’s daughter talks to both men telling them to have the towns

rebuilt into a golden kite and silver wind. ● The mandarins agreed to rebuild their towns into a kite and wind because

they support and help each other.

The two kingdoms begin to build the walls as a golden kite and the silver wind and start to thrive again.

The towns become known as the town of the Golden kite and the town of the Silver wind because of their shapes.

The mandarin decides to hold a meeting with the Kwan- Si mandarin about their city walls.

1. The mandarin, using his daughter's idea, decides to rebuild their city walls as a bludgeon to beat the pig to show that their kingdom is superior

Point of View● The story is told in third person limited

omniscient point of view. That means that the narrator tells the thoughts of one of the characters but the narrator is not a character in the story.

● The point of view enhances the story because it shows the mandarin’s character development and gives the reader an insight to his thoughts and the lessons that he learns.

Technique

.

This story uses the technique of allegory. Allegory is a poem, play, picture, etc. in which the apparent meaning of the characters and events is used to symbolize a deeper meaning or spiritual meaning.1 In this case, each village was trying to top the other in the power of the shape of their villages. This story was written during the time of the Cold War, when much of the same thing was happening between the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union. The story was an allegory for the political situation of the world at that time.

The Symbolism of the Walls● Walls symbolize barriers between people and the idea that

people want to appear stronger and wiser than their opponents.

● Both Mandarins competed against each other to see who could build the better shaped wall to surround their town.

● By building walls in the shape of a golden kite and silver wind it showed that there was unity between the two towns and that the barriers between them no longer existed.

Theme● The story teaches us that we should help one

another and work together.● The kite and wind support each other; the

kite cannot fly without wind and the wind needs a kite to make it beautiful.

● The story also teaches us that wisdom comes in many forms.

● The mandarin’s daughter surprised him by coming up with ways to solve his problems which made him realize that girls could be just as smart as boys.

RatingWe would give this short story two out of three stars.

We would give The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind two stars because:

● The techniques Bradbury uses, such as an allegory, adds to the deeper meaning of the story. It forces you to truly think about what the author is trying to say.

● However, the short story lost a star due to its original rushed and fairly uneventful plot line

● Lastly, all the characters are flat characters. The simple and predictable characters cause for a slightly tedious short story.
