    JUNE 2011

    From the President…From the President…From the President…From the President…

Hi All, Hope this finds all safe with the devastating storms that have swept across the nation. Here in western New York we have had nothing but cold and rain. I can not remember a spring this wet and late in many years. Normally much of our plowing is done by now and much of the small grain planted. No one is in the field. I thought about this with the plow sitting waiting and real-ized I was able to use horses all winter but now I am waiting. Broke two young mares over the winter and now can’t get them into the field. Before we know it the annual meeting will be here. First time in many years it has been the first of July. The opportunity to not only come to the meeting but tie it to Horse Progress Days make it a 2 or 1 bonus. Both are great events and the chance to interact with other Suffolk owners is a good time. Hope to see you there.

From the Secretary’s desk……. By the time you receive this newsletter, you will have already received the annual meeting notice along with the ballots for the election of two Directors. The results will be announced at the annual meeting. This year our annual meeting will be held during Horse Progress Days in Pennsylvania. Check elsewhere in the newsletter for the details. Thanks to all of you that have sent photos to the Lavoie’s and I for the newsletter, web page, advertising and other promotion opportunities. Please remember to take your digital photos at the highest resolution your camera offers. Do not crop, resize, or change the photo before sending it. If you still have dial-up Internet service and the file(s) are too big to send at full resolution, burn them to a disk and send them to me by mail. The better the resolution, the better the photos will look when reproduced on paper. It is time to renew the contract for the Draft Horse Journal ad in June and the Small Farmers Journal a little later. If you would like to be in both ads, the cost is $100 for both 4-issue contracts. Please send your money by June 1st so that I can get the ad copy ready by the deadlines. It has been a strange weather year…it’s either too much snow, too much rain, not enough rain, floods, wildfires, tornados, drought, can’t get in the fields to plant, or nothing to harvest! Here’s hoping that the last half of the year will be better! See you at Horse Progress Days!

    Mary Margaret

    Editor’s Note:

As this will be the last issue of the Punchline that I will be editing, stories and pictures for future Punchline issues should be sent to Mary Margaret. Thank you to all who have contributed in the past, and please continue to send in articles and pictures in the future. Melissa

How We Got Started with Suffolks By Bill Kappler Hello. My name is Bill Kappler. My wife Pat and I lIve in the extreme southwestern corner of New York state in Clymer which is the garden spot of the snowbelt. Our association with Suffolks began in August 2008 when we acquired Queen, a 16 year old mare. We had a 16 year old Belgian gelding and a 36 year old pony. We had had the Belgian since 1993 and the pony for 34 of her 36 years, (Are you getting the picture already?) In May of 2008, along with neighbors Dave and Mary Miller, my wife and I traveled to the Yoders for a visit and first look at Queen. I was somewhat hesitant about Queen as she had been blind for a number of years. We looked Queen over and weren’t disappointed. We then visited with the Yoder family for the rest of the day and for a while the next morning. After returning to Clymer, I talked with several horse people about Queen and her disability. It didn’t take very long to decide that we should take her. So, in August of 2008, a friend Jim Gruber transported Queen from Oakland to Clymer. She fit right in very quickly. My Belgian had been experiencing lameness issues and I was only able to hook him a couple of time with Queen that fall. Also our 36 year old pony , Babe, had to be put down because of the loss of teeth, arthritis and she had stopped eating most everything. Quite often she had to be helped up when she was down. Duke, the Belgian was devastated as she had been “his” for over 15 of his 16 years. Duke progressively got worse with lameness, rear end conformation problems and EPSM symptoms. Sadly, he had to be put down in the early spring of 2009. We had spent quite a bit of money over that winter but nothing would improve his state. So here we were with one horse. On the positive side, Queen turned out to be a great mare, especially for my needs and situation. She is a very willing worker and an absolute joy to work with and be around. I hooked her single to the forecart, and we traveled around the neighborhood. But, I still had it in my mind that I wanted a team and began the search for a teammate. My experience with Queen had con-vinced me that I needed another Suffolk. In October of 2009, I located a pair of Suffolks, full sis-ters, 4 and 5 years old, about 500 miles from Clymer. These were pasture horses and had no idea of what a trailer or stall was. So, in November 2009 my friend

Jim Gruber , his wife and I made the journey with his truck and trailer to pick up these Suffolk mares. We returned with both horses to Clymer the next day. I had previously made arrangements with Joe Byler, a nearby Suffolk owner, to keep the younger one over the winter. At this point she was not even really halter broke. The older one had been hooked some, and I kept her over the winter with Queen. Come spring 2010, Joe and I swapped horses in April. He had been using the younger one to spread, etc., and had started using her in plowing. The younger mare was a better match with Queen and they went well to-gether on the forecart. It was hard to believe that this was the same horse that we weren’t even sure we could load on the trailer 6 months ago. I kept the younger one and Joe wound up with the older one who was a good match for a mare he already had. During the summer of 2010 I tedded some hay with my team at a neighbor’s. Other than that I just spend time with them, using the forecart in road traffic. I am hop-ing to use them more this year. I am sold on Suffolks and have made some good friends because of our interesting and possession of draft horses. I have to especially thank Samuel Yoder who made it possible for me to acquire a Suffolk to start with. I have enjoyed knowing him and his family and learning some of the history of the Oakland settlement. Also, I have to thank Joe Byler and Jim Gruber who played a big part in helping make it possible to have a team. I should add that I’m still very much in the learn-ing stage and couldn’t have even made it this far with-out the support of good friends and neighbors. We are very fortunate to live in a farming community with Amish friends and neighbors.

    LOOKING FOR SOME ASSISTANCE, PLEASE!

As always, the ASHA will have a booth at HPD, so we are looking for some volunteers to man the booth at vari-ous times. Officers and Directors usually man the booth, but we will be busy with Board meetings, so if you are willing to volunteer to meet other ASHA members, talk about Suffolk to folks that stop by, hand out ASHA pro-motional materials, and sell ASHA promotional products for an hour or 2, please indicate what day you will be at HPD and the approximate times you would be willing to help out. You won’t have to man the booth alone...there will be someone in the booth who has experience. It’s great fun to visit with folks; we even provide chairs and a fan for volunteers! THANKS!!! Name: _______________________________________ I would like to help with the booth on ______________ from _______AM/PM (circle one)

    SUFFOLKS FOR SALE

In an effort to help prospective buyers find Suffolk horses for sale, the Association sends a For Sale List to approximately 30 inquiries

received each month. Anyone having a registered Suffolk to sell is welcome to add their horse to the following list at no charge. The

horses below will remain on this list until August 31, 2011 OR until the owner notifies the Association that the horse is no longer for

sale OR until the transfer is completed by this office, whichever comes first. If you have a horse on this list now & want it to continue

on the list, you must complete the Suffolks For Sale form (published in every Punchline) and send to this office by August 31, 2011 or

the horse(s) will be removed. This is the only way (other than charging you for the service) that we can assure the buyer that the list

    is as current as possible.
