Make Tis A SafeHoliday Season
Winter holiday tips are avail-able on both the BC Children’sHospital and BC AmbulanceService websites. Here are a ew
to keep in mind this season:1. oys: Choose items thatmatch your child’s age, abil-ities, skills and interest level.Small pieces which can easily come of, and small batteriesand magnets can cause chok-ing and/or internal chemicalburns. oys with strings longerthan 12 inches could stranglebabies and toddlers.
2. Strings o electric lights arehazardous as they are attract-ive to young children. Tey run the risk o being strangled, burned or electrocuted i they get wrapped up in the wires orput lights in their mouths.
3. Fireplaces: A child’s skinis our times thinner than anadult’s and can burn our timesaster. Te glass o a gas replace
heats up to 200˚C (400˚F) in just6 minutes and takes 45 minutesto cool down. Te pilot light o a gas replace may also heat theglass enough to cause a burn.Stay close to your child when ina room with a replace that ison or has recently been turnedof. Block the replace with ahearth gate or screen that boltsinto or around your replace, or
put a saety gate in the doorway to the room with a replace.
4. insel, ornaments and giwrap: While tinsel can makea tree sparkle, it’s also a chok-ing hazard or young children, hang them high and out o yourchild’s reach.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Darla and I am 2 yearsold. I have a long sot coat and I am amuted calico.
My story is a little sad, but you canmake it so much happier by adopt-ing me!
I came to the shelter with my twobabies Jack and Jill when we wereall ound strayed. Taking care o two
babies was hard, but taking care o them while I had a bad inection inmy eyes was even harder.
Since coming to the shelter, botho my kids have been adopted, leaving me waiting or my oreverhome. My eyes took a while to clearup, but eventually they did. My leteye scarred a little, so I have lost alittle bit o sight, but don’t worry, itdoesn’t bother me at all. I still getaround just fne, and will be fne oryears to come.
Once you see me, you will all in love!
I am sweet and gentle, and love tobe petted and cuddled. I will evenlet you brush my coat, which should
get done once a week or so, just toensure I don’t get any mats.
Since I was a stray, I might like to gooutside once and a while, supervisedo course. I had to catch enough oodor mysel and my babies too, so I betI would catch some mice or you inmy new home.
I am a pretty laid back girl, and would
do well either on my own or with acat companion. I have encounteredkids while here at the shelter, andthey didn’t scare or bother me, so Iwould ft into your amily easily.
Since I did have an eye inectionbeore, it would be best or my newowners to keep an eye on my eyes asI get older. My caregivers here don’tthink I will have any more problemsbut it is always good to be proactiveabout my care.
Ater reading this, I am sure someoneout there would love to come and
meet me. You can get more inorma-tion on me here at the Trail shelter oryou can call at 250-368-5910 or byemail at trail@spca.bc.ca.

Keep Warm AndSave Money Tis Winter
As the days gets shorter and the weather gets colder, energy demand across the province almost doubles aspeople turn up the heat and keep lights and electronics onor longer. In act, space heating costs alone can accountor rom 40 to 50 per cent o the average electricity billdepending on how customers heat their homes.
However, BC Hydro has some easy ways to keep yourbills low this winter. And in the uture with smart meters, you’ll be able to see how much energy you’re using andmake adjustments to save money.
Here are BC Hydro’s top seven energy-ef cient home-heating and lighting tips to help keep your bills low:
• Dra-proo your home – Sealing the gaps and crackswith caulking and weather stripping is one o the mostcost-eective steps you can take to keep the heat insideyour home, reducing heat loss by up to 10 per cent.
• Manage your thermostat – Install a programmablethermostat. Most people are comortable sitting reading or
watching V at 21 degrees C, working around the house at20 degrees C, and sleeping at 16 degrees C. Heating costsrise about 5 per cent or every degree above 20 degrees Cthat you set your thermostat.
• Shade your windows – Using blinds or drapes on yourwindows provide insulation in the winter and summer.Heat loss rom windows can account or 10 – 25 per cento your heating bill in winter.
• Maintain your heating system – une up your heatingequipment and continue to give it regular maintenance inorder to increase its energy ef ciency.
• Add or upgrade insulation - Upgrading your heatingsystem might make your home warmer, but i it can’t holdthe heat in, you’ll be wasting energy. Start in areas that losethe most heat, such as attics, basements and crawlspaces.
• Ensure your replace is ef cient – With wood-burningreplaces, close the damper tightly when the replace isnot in use. Tis can dramatically reduce heat loss. I youuse the replace only occasionally, install glass doors. Tey act as a barrier against warm air loss up the chimney andstop the pull o cold outside air into the home.
• Use energy-ef cient lighting – LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy than incandescent lighting and can last about20 years based on average household use. ENERGY STARLEDs come on quickly, are durable and good or dimming.

Hospice In Our Community Providing practical, emotional and spiritual support
to individuals and their loved ones through the stages o dying, death and bereavement, Nelson and District Hos-pice Society (NDHS) ofers hospice/palliative care servi-ces in Nelson, Kaslo, the East Shore o Craword Bay andsurrounding area.
NDHS has been providing services in our community or over 25 years. Hospice is not only a place, but a move-ment – volunteers, proessionals, caregivers – ensuring
compassionate care or the terminally ill, the dying, thebereaved and their amilies.
When one person dies an average o ve people are dir-ectly afected.
Most Canadians wish to die at home but without ad-equate support the majority die in hospitals.
In 2010, 40 NDHS volunteers ofered over 1,700 hourso direct care to 86 clients.
NDHS services include one-on-one support, a grief and trauma response team, grief group facilitation, public
speaking, community education, volunteer training, work-place bereavement support, anticipatory grief support, awebsite resource, telephone support and a lending library.
NDHS hosts annual community events such as the “Liv-ng with Our Dying” series as well as the Hike or Hospice
and Tree o Remembrance.
NDHS ofers a Lie Time membership o $25 which en-titles members to receive a lapel pin, semi-annual e-news-etter and special invitations.
Donations to NDHS stay in the community which youwish to support and are vital to providing on-going servi-ces and the development o new programs.
By making a donation to your area hospice you are dir-ectly supporting the dying and the bereaved in your com-munity as well as their caregivers and those who mightotherwise die alone.
Consider donating to NDHS. Donations over $10 re-ceive a tax-deductible receipt. Due to Canada Revenueregulations, we cannot issue a receipt or memberships.
Secure donations can be made on our website www.can-adahelps.org or sent to our mailing address. Please indi-cate which area you wish to support. For more ino visitour website at www.nelsonhospice.org or mail to PO Box194, Nelson BC, V1L 5P9.

It is with deep sadness weannounce the passing of our fa-ther Fred May, with his family athis side. Predeceased by his wifeof 66 years, Billie May in 2009, he will be truly missed byhis family, Dave (Teresa), Peter (Mary-Lou), Joy (Barry),Lynne (Dennis), Phillip, John and Don (Wendy), 11 grand-children and 20 great grandchildren.
He was born in England and served on the Atlanticin the Royal British Merchant Navy and met the love ofhis life in Newfoundland in 1942. They lived in Englanduntil after the war and came to Canada in 1946. Theyset up their home in Balfour and Fred worked as First

Christmas Eve Dinner
Our Daily Bread and Kootenay Christian Fellowship are once again
hosting a community wide Christ-mas Eve Dinner. Tis dinner is opento anyone who would like to attendand will be held at 5 pm at 812 Stan-ley Street. All guests will receive a frstclass dinner in a pleasant and homey atmosphere, plus a wrapped Christ-mas Gi.
We are aware that there are somewho do not experience the “amily”environment that the Christmas
season promotes. For some, amily members may havepassed away or there may be extenuating circumstanceswhere they are unable to make a journey to their amily. At Kootenay Christian Fellowship and Our Daily Bread,we desire to create that amily experience.
During the Christmas season we receive the majority of our support to operate Our Daily Bread. Last year duringthis time, the community gave $23,000 in addition to themany in-kind donations. We greatly appreciate individualsand business for supporting this vital service within ourcommunity. Without this support we could not operate.
o host our Christmas dinner it costs approximately $4per plate. Any donations received above the cost o ourChristmas Eve dinner will go to providing meals through-out the next year. ODB provides hot meals fve days aweek and other vital services to the working poor, thoselooking or work, the homeless, and the amilies that areless ortunate. Initiative Picking Up TePieces At Te Library
Te current exhibition at the Nel-son Public Library is all about pickingup the pieces – and turning them intosomething beautiul.
“As someone unable to throw outanything — particularly shimmer-ing morsels o material — I gather upall the allen bits at the end o every project,” explains abric artist KateBridger. “Afer many projects, thereare enough saved scraps or me todip my hands into a gorgeous bucketo potential abric brushstrokes andstart to play.”
Te result is a body o work Bridgercalls Picking up the Pieces — abstractsthat “portray the ordinary caught ineeting moments when it is not allbundled up and packaged as we ex-pect it to be,” she says.
Included in the exhibition are ab-ric “paintings” such as Picking up thePieces of a Fish Ladder, with its uidlines and shapes, Picking up the Piecesof a Mountain, an ice-coloured hom-age, and Picking up the Pieces of aGarden Rake, an intricate assemblageo tines and oliage.
Kate Bridger has been a practicingabric artist since the early 1980s.Over the years she has invented, re-ned, and experimented with materi-als, subject matter, and techniques. Her abric collages, rendered withreestyle machine stitching, portray landscapes, streetscapes, wildlie, architecture, and abstracts.
“I am attracted to abric as my medium because it provides instanttexture, because o its layering prop-erties, and because o the unpredict-ability o this relatively unstablemedium that ofen leads me downpaths I had not oreseen,” she says.
Picking up the Pieces will be on dis-play in the library through Decemberand January. 10% rom each sale willbe donated by the artist to the NelsonFood Cupboard.

“Productivity is driven by investment in physical capital, human capital and innovation,” says Paul Wiest, Managerof Community Futures Central Kootenay in Nelson. “Wewanted to take a close look at these drivers, and see howorganizations like ours can help small and medium-sizedbusinesses improve their productivity.”
British Columbia performs below most provinces whent comes to productivity measures. In a recent Conference
Board of Canada report, British Columbia received a “D”
grade when ranked against ten comparative economic re-gions.
“British Columbia’s low productivity score has far-reaching implications for businesses within the Kootenay Boundary region,” says Rob Gay, Manager of Commun-ity Futures East Kootenay in Cranbrook. “Many need tocompete with businesses in Alberta, which ranks higherthan BC when it comes to productivity. In this region, theage of our workforce is also higher than the provincialaverage, and our immigration numbers are lower. Takentogether these statistics could see our region fall furtherbehind in the not too distant future.”
Businesses in the Kootenay Boundary region interestedin taking part are invited to contact Paul Wiest at 250-352-1933.
