Conformal antenna is an antennathat conforms to a prescribedshape. The shape can be some partof an airplane, high-speed train, orother vehicle. The purpose is tobuild the antenna so that itbecomes integrated with thestructure and does not cause extradrag. The purpose can also be thatthe antenna integration makes theantenna less disturbing, less visibleto the human eye.

Problems

Considerable drag, increasedfuel consumption and visibleto the human eye.Integrating these antennasinto the vehicle skin is highlydesirable.

PROBLEMS

Some of the antenna functionsshould be combined in the sameunit if the design can be madebroadband enough. The need ofintegrated antennas is increasedwhen the huge-size apertureantennas are used in militaryvehicles for satellitecommunication, for detectingthe drones and for thesurveillance radars.

A German automobile companysuccessfully setup anddemonstrated a communicationon the move (COTM) satelliteconnection. 2Mbps link wastested with speeds up to 105mph on high-way.

Ford with ACC priced at $1,000 now, but it only works down to 20 mph

Self-Driving Cars in TrafficTo detect traffic threats, self-drivingcars use an array of multi-bandsensors like pyramidal conformalarray radar mounted on the roof ofthe vehicle, other four radars whichare mounted on the front and rearbumpers that allow the car to "see"far enough to be able to deal withfast traffic on freeways.

Future Work

Design and simulation on Feko and Matlab

We are working to mount the conformalarray antenna onto the rear view mirrorand on the front and rear bumpers of themoving vehicle.

We could use these antennas as a

• Short range radar

• Medium range radar

• Long range radar

• For emergency auto steering

• For emergency auto break24

Challenges

• How would be a self-driving car deal with a sensor(RADAR,LIDAR, camera) or a mechanical failure?

• Do you remember stealth plane? If our Radar did not detect apasser-by, vehicle would be roll over without any hesitation.

• What would happen in case of slip, slide, rain or snow?

• How would the multiple self-driving cars sensors responsewhen they are very close to each other
