Part 2: Connect to Data and Build an Application

Exercise 2

Create an app and load data

Automatic Workshop Setup

• Copy and extract the QlikSenseWorkshop.zip folder into a folder on your

machine. Within the zip file, you will see the following materials:

– Apps

– Data

– Images

– Installation packages

• Run Qlik Sense Workshop Installer.exe whom will validate if Qlik Sense

content folders already exist and copy all the collaterals into correct location.

• If Qlik Sense Desktop is missing the installer will ask you to install it.

Exercise 2 - Create the app

• Create your first app

• Drag the Customers.xlsx file on to Qlik Sense.

• Select the table Customers and all the columns

• Check the suggested associations between tables.

• Open the Data model viewer to see the final data model loaded.

• Go back to the previous tab to work in the visualizations.

The KPI overview could look like this:

Use an appropriate object size (1x2, 2x1, 2x2) since the responsiveness will enlarge or

make smaller the image when changing the screen size available.

Data Load editor

Data Load Editor

• Open the Data load editor in a new window

• Create a new Folder connection to the data folder.

Load the Geodata.xlsx file

• We will use the Latitude and Longitude of the Cities.

• Load the 3 columns

Create geopoints using the coordinates

• Your script will look like this.

• Modify it using the GeoMakePoint function to create the geopoints

and store them in the Geokey field

Adding date-based fields

• Unlock the Auto-Generated section in the script

• Create new date-based fields using the [OrderDate] field

1. Drag a Map object on to the sheet and select City as Dimension

2. Add sum(Sales) as a Measure

Snapshots

• Use the Snapshot button to take a snapshot of an object

Adding Snapshots to the Story

• Go back to your Story and drag the Snapshots to the 1st slide of the Story

Use one of the Effects with the Bar Chart to highlight USA

Finishing the 1st slide of the Story

• Add a Title to the 1st slide

New slide with dynamic content (app sheet)

• Add a new slide with dynamic objects

• Use the Sheet left-aligned in the top-left corner

Using Extensions

Installing a Extension (Qlik Sense Desktop)

• Go to the folder (create it if it doesn’t exist):

C:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER\Documents\Qlik\Sense\Extensions

• Paste the extension folder uncompressed

Using an Extension

• Refresh the Application tab using F5

• The installed Extensions will appear in the

Charts panel

• Drag the Extension to the workspace and

configure it (Dimensions, Measures, etc.)

Using an Extension – deltaViz KPI tiles

• Drag the deltaViz Extension to the workspace

• Requires 1 Dimension

– Set Category as Dimension

• Requires 2 Measures:

– Add Sales and Costs as Measures
