important service the SU
provides is representation.
Through the elected officer
team, headed by the President

independent from QMU, which
works to ensure you get the

peers in a social environment.
Higher education is not just
geared towards academic
success.
The SU offers a variety of
activities and entertainment
that you can get involved in,

to suit your sporting taste.
The SU tries to communicate
with students through different
media including the free

the website, email and posters
for news on what is going on.
WELFARE
Welfare is one of the SUs core
functions. The SU and the SUs

International Student Case Study 26
QMU Welcomes International Students 28
International Links and European Union 31
I had always wanted to follow a career in the hospitality industry and
chose to study in another country so that I could experience another
education system and obtain a broader perspective of the industry.
The college that I had studied at in India was affiliated to QMU andI was able to continue my studies there. I was very excited by this
prospect as, after researching, I found that QMU was only one of
the few UK universities which provided the highest level of education
in hospitality.
When I first moved to Edinburgh, it was a bit of a cultural shock and
it took me a few days to adjust to my new life and a new education
system. I soon settled in however and was able to build my confidence
and interpersonal, organisational and communication skills. The staff at
QMU were very kind, helpful and supportive in every way. I also became
a Students Union representative, which made my student life more
interesting. The administration skills which I gained at QMU have also
proved very useful and are now a great help to my in my current job.
After graduating, I worked as restaurant supervisor at Best Western
Hotel, Edinburgh. I then went on to become graduate training manager
at Crieff Hydro and now Im back at Best Western Hotel, this time as
assistant general manager. I am rapidly moving up the career ladder
and thoroughly enjoying the experience.
I have enjoyed studying and living in Edinburgh as it has become
second home after staying in Scotland for four years. It is a place
of peace, harmony and excitement and true to my expectation of a
student city. On the whole, my time at QMU was one of the best and
I really miss it. I would recommend QMU to any foreign student who
wanted to study in another country.

INTERNATIONAL LINKS
QMU is well known for its
expertise in many areas of higher
education. In recent years we
have been developing our
international links with overseasinstitutions and taking our
expertise abroad to deliver
courses in our specialist
subjects.
This has led to a series of
agreements with international
institutions and means that many
of the courses we teach in
Scotland are now also taught
in various centres of learning
throughout the world.
Some of our agreementsalso mean that international
students can come to QMU
to study part, or all, of their
degree course. QMU is currently
developing partnerships across
the globe including universities
in Singapore, Greece and the
Gulf States.
Academic partners in India offer
local students in Kolkata and
Mumbai the chance to study
aspects of our Hospitality andTourism programme. We have
an active international student
exchange and study abroad
programme that includes
agreements with universities
in the USA, Canada, Germany,
France, Australia, Spain, Japan,
Sweden, Norway, Portugal,
Czech Republic and Latvia.
Our Health and Nursing
specialists also have close
links with the Omayal Achi
College of Nursing in Chennai,
India and colleges in Saudi
Arabia and Egypt.
The Institute for International
Health and Development at
QMU has an excellent reputation
for the provision of postgraduate
education in international health,
social development andpopulation and reproductive
health to a wide range of
participants from across the
globe. Furthermore the Institute
provides research and technical
assistance to a range of
international agencies,
governments and international
and national non-government
organisations. There is ongoing
work in Nigeria, Uganda,
Cambodia, and the areas
affected by the tsunami,
especially Sri Lanka and
Indonesia. We are also
undertaking work for WHO
and in the UK, have experience
of working with programmes for
refugees and asylum seekers
as well as with HIV Scotland.
In 2008, QMU became the first

I had always enjoyed travelling and learning new languages, so I
decided to study Tourism Management. However, once I had started,
I also really enjoyed the business and marketing subjects that were
taught as part of the degree and in Years Three and Four, I was ableto tailor make my course by choosing more of these subjects as
electives. I was attracted to the community feel I got when I first
visited QMU and thought Id perform better in this type of environment
rather than at a large university where Id just be a number!
I was impressed that the subjects were not just theory based: getting
practical industry experience was something I was keen to have,
which other universities, in my opinion, do not offer to the same extent
and I was better equipped for the working environment as a result.
I completed my six month work placement in Cape Cod, Massachusetts,
US, where I was a management trainee in a busy hotel and conference
centre. This gave me the opportunity to fulfil my love of travelling and
experiencing new cultures, while also receiving excellent training and
work experience in a country where hospitality and tourism training
is recognised as being second to none.
I graduated with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Hospitality and Tourism
Management and was soon appointed as marketing manager for
a leading UK food supplies company. During this role, I set up a
marketing department in the company and managed the companys
marketing activity as a whole, as well as the marketing activity of a
telesales team of nine, and sales team of six. I then left this company
5 years ago and started a franchise company, Smart Cartridge, with
my business partner. I am now the international development director,
having taken a concept and built it into an internationally renowned
franchise brand with over 60 stores in 5 countries (UK, Ireland, Spain,
Portugal and the Dominican Republic) since starting to franchise.
The company continues to grow from strength to strength with
the addition of a concession in a UK high street retailer and the
development of a distribution arm for the distribution of our own
branded products. We are also preparing the company for a full listing
on the US stock market as part of our US expansion plans for 2007.
This year I was named as a finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year
Awards which is part of the exclusive and renowned National Business
Awards. As one of the youngest females in franchising and owner of
one of Scotlands fastest growing and successful franchise brands,
this was a fantastic achievement!

BA/BA (Hons)
The BA Consumer Studies at Queen Margaret University gives you
the opportunity to study subjects which are relevant to all of us in
the modern world: what our rights are when we buy goods and
services, the way businesses use marketing techniques to sell
to us, and how we can make consumption sustainable in a time
of environmental threat.
Youll learn about law, management and business, and have the
chance to explore in depth the worlds of fashion and food. From
government policy to behavioural psychology, youll understandthe influences shaping the buying decisions each of us make
on a daily basis. And with our practical, applied approach, youll
develop the kind of transferable skills that will help you succeed
at University and in life.
The BA Consumer Studies is deliberately vocational we want
you to learn what you need to succeed in your chosen career.
Among other career options, we offer the only degree in Scotland
accredited by the Trading Standards Institute, and our graduates
are also eligible to apply for postgraduate teacher training in
Home Economics.

I first found out about QMU through hotel and catering circles as I had a part-time job in a hotel whilst in my final year at school. My
intended career path was to go into hotel management, and I originally applied for that course at QMU, however, at the last minute,
I discovered the BA in Applied Consumer Studies with Retail Business and switched to that since it appeared to give students
wider options.
During my first year of the course, a Trading Standards Officer paid my year a visit and lectured us on his role. I was instantly hooked
and in my second year, I undertook a work placement with the Trading Standards Office in Perth (where Im from). They were a great
bunch of professionals and helped me enormously and from then on thats what I wanted to do.
After graduating from Queen Margaret, I got a job as Trainee Trading Standards Officer for Strathclyde Regional Council I was one
of 950 applicants for 4 posts!!! In part, I think the fact I went to QMU and had tailored my degree towards the profession enabled
me to get my foot in the door! Whilst there, I also undertook the Diploma in Trading Standards which was tough going but I was
to survive the test! On qualification, I moved from Strathclyde back to Edinburgh as a fully fledged Trading Standards Officer and
specialised in consumer credit legislation, going on to head that particular team. I am now the Consumer Protection Group Manager
for North Tyneside Council. The Council serves a population of 190,000 and I am responsible for managing a family of regulatory
services including; Building Control, Environmental Health, Licensing, and Trading Standards. I aim to keep improving and
developing professionally and Id like to do an MBA at some point.
Looking back at my QMU days, the course encouraged you to look beyond the text books and apply theory to practical situations.
This equipped me with the skills that would be required in real-life situations and I wouldnt be where I am today without having done it.

The need for people to celebrate or mark events of significance is no
new phenomenon. However in the 21st century, the number, scale
and complexity of national and international events taking place has
increased enormously. These events are organised by businesses
to promote and market products or to reward and motivate staff.
Governments and other organisations are also increasingly using
events to support a range of policy objectives from encouraging
tourism, regenerating communities and stimulating local economies
to arousing civic pride, or celebrating sporting and culturaloccasions. However, with the increasing scale of the events
business, and the diversity and range of the dimensions of events
operations, the industry has required an increasingly professional
approach. The professional events manager requires an
understanding of planning, management, logistics, legal issues,
budgeting, staging, marketing, promotions and evaluation, as well
as understanding the impact of events on the host communities.
Your studies focus on the nature and characteristics of events
and their design and management.
EVENTS MANAGEMENT IS CONCERNED WITH THE DESIGN AND
MANAGEMENT OF SUCCESSFUL EVENT OPERATIONS. IT ENCOMPASSES
ACTIVITIES AND OCCASIONS THAT RANGE FROM FESTIVALS TO MUSIC,
SPORTING AND ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS.

When I finished high school, I wasnt immediately ready to further my studies straight
away and decided to travel to Bostwana where I spent a few months doing voluntary
work. After this amazing experience, I spent a year working and then I moved to
Edinburgh to do an HNC in Acting and Performance at Edinburghs Telford College.
After completing my HND, I chose to study Events Management as it had been on
my mind and opted for QMU as its courses seemed to be quite practical and this
is what attracted me.
Now in my third year, the course so far has given a really good balance between
practical and theory. The modules are really interesting and provide lots of information
that is helpful in the business. All the lecturers are really helpful. A few are also really
well networked and therefore know when events jobs come up and let us know so that
we can apply and gain practical experience. In my second year, we had to do a work
placement and I applied to Historic Scotland to be part of their Events & Filming Team
and I have been there ever since. Its a fantastic job and is the best experience I could
have asked for to help me with my future career. I feel very lucky, I mean, how many
people can say that they love their job?! Theres not a lot of event managers that
have a selection of spectacular castle to choose from for venues!.
After I graduate I plan to stay at Historic Scotland for a further year of so. I then want
to work with a company where I can travel across Britain (or further) with but I wouldprefer to stay based in Edinburgh as I love it here.
