QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN EVALUATING TMS SOLUTIONS

FOUR

WHAT PROBLEM(S) ARE YOU TRYING TO SOLVE?

Be very sure about the problems you are trying to solve with a TMS and what objectives you want to achieve. Being realistic and practical is critical and will drive tangible benefits.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE TRANSPORTATION MODE REQUIREMENTS?

Even if you are not operating multimodal today, you might be tomorrow. Your TMS system must be flexible and built to grow with you as your business grows.

DO YOU HAVE A BROAD ENOUGH CARRIER NETWORK TO ENSURE COST EFFICIENCY TO MEET YOUR NEEDS?

As your geographic needs increase, you are going to need to leverage more carriers in those geographical areas. Whether domestic or international, you need to have more carrier options and the ability to assess which ones will be the most cost effective and efficient.

WHAT OTHER VALUE ADD SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS MIGHT YOU NEED?

Consider the integration of value added capabilities including yard management, cargo, freight, storage, break bulk, cross docking and other capabilities into a TMS. This is where convergence takes place. If your organization is global, how do cross border customs and compliance capabilities get integrated into your TMS? You need to be able to move goods across borders and having an integrated TMS solution is a “must have.”
