President’s Message Hello 2018! We have so much planned for this coming year in the guild, something for everyone. Our Janu-ary Quarterly meeting is on January 25, and we will have as our Guest Speaker, Linda Schmidt, as well as two days of classes with her as well – Friday is “Garment Techniques” and Saturday will be “Whimsical Wa-terfalls”. You can find out more information and register here for the workshops. Because Membership has its privileges and because our Quarterly meetings are usually a unique experi-ence, often times with National Guest Speakers, we recently decided to charge non-members a $10 fee to attend our quarterly meetings. Members may bring one guest with them to the meetings, and a nonmem-ber may attend our meetings one time without paying the entrance fee, but after that, they will be asked to pay. The cost to attend our Quarterly meetings for one year is similar to what it would cost for an annual membership in the Guild. We are one of the few guilds that allow nonmembers to join us at our meetings, particularly when we have the type of National Guest Speakers that our Program Chairs have been able to bring to us. We are also gearing up for a great Quilt Show in March, “What Was Old Is New Again”. We have already received several entries, which is a good thing, since we are capping entries at 230! So, if you are interested in entering a quilt in the show, be sure to fill out the form and get it in. You can find out all about the show here, or just visit here to register. As always, you must be a member of Desert Quilters of Nevada in order to enter your quilt in the show. The deadline is February 2, so don’t wait. After we reach the 230 slots avail-able for quilt entries, all entries will go on a wait list. Wishing health and happiness for all this year! Mary Jane Eichholz

LOOSE THREADS is the featured Circle at Quilt Las Vegas 2018 – They are asking for your help and input!

One of the plans for our area in the Quilt Show is to en-courage new quilters through demos, hands-on, and abil-ity to talk with quilters. In order to be able to answer the next question, i.e., “Where can I go to get further assis-tance?”, we would like to do the following:

1. Have a list of Mentors with phone number, email and geographic location in the Valley who are will-ing to help a beginning quilter get started.

2. Have a list of circles or other locations where quilters gather to sew and

are willing to help new quilters/sewers develop their skills.

If you would to be included in one or both of these lists, please send your infor-mation to Judy Kaufman, jbug.kaufman@gmail.com Our goal is to prepare lists for distribution during the Show. If you have further questions, please contact Judy.

Colorado River Quilters in Bullhead City, AZ, are extending an invitation to your club members to attend our Quilts on the River Quilt Show on March 16 and 17, 2018 from 9 a.m.-5 p. m. at Desert Valley Elementary School, 1066 Marina Blvd., in Bullhead City. Admission is $5 per day. Enjoy ven-dors, a boutique, door prizes and a display of wonderful quilts. If you have questions, please email Judy Lawhon at 1618fiesta@gmail.com or call Melinda Sobraske at 928-758-5585.

garments, & also learn how to use fabric paints, fusibles, heat guns, cracked ice, Solvy, Lutradur, Tyvek, Angelina & Tintzi fiber, Puff Paint, foil & many other substances to create special effects while remain-ing true to the quilting tradition. Hello fellow quilters and quilt lovers! This year’s Quilt Show is going to be a wonderful display of your ex-traordinary works of fiber art and love of quilting! It’s time to take a look at our stash and piles of UFO’s and pull out one and fall in love with it all over again. Finish it up and enter it into the show! March 29, 30, and 31st of 2018 will be the 2018 Quilt Las Vegas Show at the Henderson Convention Center. Registration paper work was mailed out in December and will be online for your convenience. Remember to register your quilts early as the first 230 items will be included in the show, and once we hit that limit all others will go on a waitlist. Remember your first and second entries are free with your paid membership. Your second and third entries are just $7.00 each and can be paid for online in the DQN store (www.dqnv.org) or paid by check with your registration paperwork and mailed. For any person submitting more than four entries, the 5th and additional items will be waitlisted and considered after the deadline to round out the show. QUILTS FOR GOLDFIELD NEVADA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! By Mary Sprenger

About 2 months ago, I met Tina Ottolino at Sew Yeah and learned that she was a teach-er at Goldfield Elementary School in Goldfield, Nevada. She told me they had a total of 25 students ranging from Pre-K to 8th grade. She also shared that many of the children come from disadvantaged homes and some of the parents have drug problems. There-fore, school is a safe haven for many of the kids. Goldfield is at a higher altitude so it gets colder than our wonderful weather. Tina is a quilter and wished everyone had a quilt so I said "Let me see what I can do". I went to the circles where I hang out and God Bless them, they came through. I had 30 quilts, 2 knitted afghans and a suede/sherpa throw. Patty White (DQN member) was in the store so I introduced her to Miss Tina and Patty said "Can they use hats?" And of course the answer was a big "YES"! So Patty and her sister Dianne Jecs, Patty's hus-band Bob and their daughter Jennifer knitted 30 caps, made fleece scarves and bought gloves for everyone. Bobbie Stember heard what we were doing and donated 3 quilts of her own, about a half dozen from Carol Hille's estate and 25 Beanie Babies each in its own drawstring bag. About a dozen other DQN members donated fabulous quilts. Bobbie Stember and her son Scott Stember (shown in the background of one picture in red sweatshirt) drove up to Goldfield with me on Thursday, December 14. It was the last day of school be-fore Xmas break and the teacher had promised them a movie and cocoa and cookies. (One of the photos show them lying on their quilts watching the movie.) I thought I would get more pictures with my camera but it got pretty hectic with the first wave of about 13 very excited youngsters ages about 7-10 years milling about and spreading their quilts out to get a better look, but someone was there taking pictures so I hope for better pictures to come later. We did have one quilt that was queen sized so we gave it to Miss Tina. She was overwhelmed with joy. We also had a small flannel quilt that went to Miss Tina's aide for her baby. This project was not approved by the Board, but we gave credit to the circles and individual DQN members who participated. It was a whim that I felt a need to step up to and I am totally and deliriously happy to have had a part in this project.

OMG! You should have seen the happy faces on these kids ages Pre-K through 8th grade. At the end of the day they had a movie and cocoa and cookies. What a special day for a special bunch of kids!

PS The movie was "The Polar Express". Brrr----where is my warm quilt?

CIRCLE NEWS—what’s happening around our guild

PAGE 11 DQN CHATTER

ART QUILTS, ETC. - At our October meeting, Rickie Seifried showed us how to use Dye-Na-Flow fabric paint. The November meeting was the last meeting of the year and was our holiday potluck. In 2018, AQE will have a themed show and tell in conjunction with regular show and tell. January’s theme is “favorite project”. Proposals are starting to be submitted for artistic classes/projects and there is discussion of having a fea-tured artist of the month, 10 per year. Annie Romero and Betty Scott are coordinating the projects for the July and August project meetings. All the demos, which are held after the monthly business meetings, have been scheduled for 2018. It has been another great year for our circle, and we look forward to our upcoming demos, projects and events in 2018.

BLACK MOUNTAIN CIRCLE - September: We spent the evening cutting squares and strips for the Veterans’ quilts that we will be making as a project this year. Christine Dunn showed the projects that will be done in October . Then we had show and tell. October: The guest speaker for our annual meeting had to cancel so on Friday we made quilts for the hurricane vic-tims. Bobbie helped us make heart quilts. We distributed the squares for the star quilts. Norma Chadwick made 100 rail fence blocks to be used. November: The Quilts of Valor quilts are being made by Black Mountain Circle using Susie Star blocks and Rail Fence blocks and 10 ½” blocks and half-square blocks. Kathy Farris talked about her niece who was injured while serving and the many quilts she has received. When the quilts are done, we need a label stating who made the blocks, who made the top, who quilted the quilt, and who bound the quilt. All this information will be on the label on the back for the recipient. Kathy Farris showed the heart quilts that were made last weekend. We also showed the Quilts of Valor that were brought in. Kathy asked us a Guild question: “What do we want to do for retreat this year?” Louise talked about having it at the Tropicana in Laughlin. Other ideas will be presented at the board meeting on Saturday. Our Circle would like to have it held at a cheaper venue so more people would be able to participate. Our Christmas party will be held at the home of Kathy Farris at 220 W Rochell at 6:00 during our regular meeting time in December. We will give gift cards for the street teens and exchange Christmas fabric and batik fabrics. Please put the amount of the gift card on the card.

GREEN VALLEY CIRCLE - Good News: We have new leadership, Co-Leaders, Becky Kerna and Barbara Kiehne. Patsy Musaraca has resigned the post and will be going on to relax at home with her husband, Frank. November's class was a huge success. Sandy Crawford taught her desert landscape potholder class, with instruction in free motion quilting. Our next year’s schedule has not been formulated yet, but will be soon. LONE MOUNTAIN CIRCLE: - The industrious ladies in our group have made and donated the following from 1/1/2017 thru 8/31/2017: 330 dog beds 65 small and lap quilts 24 adult bibs 25 reg bibs 9 walker bags 47 goodie bags 50 beanie babies with bags 60 toys 2 quilts donated to Mtn View Presbyterian Church. The beneficiaries have been SPCA, Adult Day Care, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, West Care and El Jen rest homes. Keep up the good work ladies! CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

LONE MOUNTAIN (CONTINUED) We are all currently making 12.5 inch flag blocks for QOV, and coming up on 11/13 we will have our challenge quilts done and ready for viewer's choice voting. Prizes will be awarded. All the quilts will then be donated to the adult daycare. The challenge consisted of participants getting a bag with orphan blocks, from which a minimum 50x60 quilt had to be made. RAINBOW CIRCLE—Thank you all for sharing your time and talent for the people in Houston, Texas. We have sent about 50 quilts. Shout out to Chris, Jeanne, Kathy, Carol, Christine, Regina, Linda, Lisa, Erin, Karen, Sheila, and so many more! Continued good health and creative quilting in 2018—Bobby Stember Rainbow Circle had a great Christmas party and gift exchange. The January meeting will be on the 24th with Judi Junge teaching a basket class from 10am—12pm. Regular meeting for Rainbow is 1pm—3pm. We welcome all new members. SCARLETT BONNETS -

SCARLETT BONNETS (CONTINUED) Scarlett Bonnets held their Christ-mas luncheon Dec. 2nd at The Restaurant in the Boulder Dam Hotel in Boulder City. Kathie Bailey's granddaughter Dani and her friend Joyce were guests and we gained a new member, Regina DeMatteo. Bobbie Stember handed out her homemade fudge ( a tradition). This year we did a recipe exchange and Mary Sprenger and Ann Benoit brought yummy samples. For show and tell Dani, who is 10, brought the quilt she made, Mary Sprenger showed her holiday bowl and Kathie Bailey showed her Red Hat wall hanging. We also brought non-perishable food items for Three Square which Mary Sprenger offered to deliver. Our next meeting is February 3rd and a day road trip to St. George was discussed for that day. We also discussed that instead of having our April meeting, the members should volunteer for the quilt show. Left: Kathy Bailey showed her Red Hat wall hanging.

SILVER DOLL-ERS ETC - The Silver Doll-ers Etc Circle was pleased to welcome 2 new members at our November meeting, at which Maurine Adrezin taught us some weaving techniques. Maurine graciously provided looms for us to work on. Our Dress a Girl Around the World presentation was cancelled in November due to the illness of the rep-resentative. We have re-scheduled the presentation for our January meeting. This organization collects dresses for girls in need across the globe. The members look forward to hearing about the program and how they can partici-pate in this noble project. In addition, at our January meeting, we will try our hands at crocheting with beads. All are welcome!
