Title: Rules and Procedures Quiz Write first and last name, date, block.

Objective: Students will describe the three regions of NC and tell how the natural resources affect the state.

Borders Atlantic Ocean= moisture from ocean

NC is in the “sun belt.” Being in the South means we are closer to equator = warmer temp., more sunlight

Costal Plain (sub region is the Tidewater), Piedmont, Mountains

Eastern part of the state (closest to Atlantic)

Outer Banks which are barrier islands- protect mainland from storms, winds off ocean. Storms hit islands 1st, weaken.

Sandbar:

Barrier- keep something out. Why is it important to keep storms out of

the mainland?

Outer Banks were dangerous for early ships which crashed b/c of changing winds, and sandbars, shallow channels. Called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”

Costal Plain (sub region is the Tidewater),

Tidewater: rivers & water change w/ ocean tide, lots of marsh & swamps

0 elevation!

Access to many rivers, fishing Flat land!

FARMING!!!Loam (soil mixed with sand, dead plants) is

very fertile

Middle of NC, lots of rolling hills. Fall line separates Piedmont & Coast

(see waterfalls b/c of change in elevation)

Less fertile soil b/c of clay & more rocks.

Many minerals, valuable stones- ex granite, quartz

Western part of state, highest elevation = colder climate. Home of Appalachian Mountains. Longest mnt chain on east coast.

Mnts. block cold air masses and precipitation = more rain & snow. in mnts

Soil too rocky for major farming Lots of mineral resources Variety of trees = NC leading wood

manufacturer

3 corners: when you see a picture, move to the corner that represents that region.
