Gallego wins city championship

Two Sunnyside District schools – Gallego Basic and Rivera elementary schools - battled for the city title at this year’s Dale Lopez Roskruge Cougar Classic Basketball Tournament. The final score was Gallego 19, Rivera 18.

Give Kids a Smile Day

The Arizona Dental Association, Pima Community College, Pima County Health Department and many volunteer dentists, dental hygienists and dental hygiene students donated time and resources to provide dental exams, cleanings and oral health education to more than 70 Sunnyside District students. Kristin Robinson-Lund, Ocotillo Preschool Nurse, coordinates Give Kids a Smile Day.

Sunnyside High School qualified as the number one team for the 5A Division II state team title.

The Blue Devil wrestlers will compete this Saturday, February 28 in Phoenix at Shadow Mountain High School.

State writing award

Desert View ninth-grader Selena Padilla won second place in the 9-10 grade category of the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest, which is sponsored by the Arizona Educational Foundation.

Selena and teacher Maria Elena Wakamatsu were invited to a special Arizona Statehood event with the governor in Phoenix on February 12.

Ben’s Bell for Harry Parks

Ocotillo Preschool custodian Harry Parks was awarded a Ben’s Bell for making the community a “better, kinder place to live.”

Liberty Elementary School Principal Bernie Cohn is one of two principals to be the first in Pima County honored by the Rodel Charitable Foundation as an Exemplary Principal.

He will receive $5,000 in savings bonds and will mentor three aspiring principals over the next two years.
