Part 1:

We are Incredibly Understaffed!

Background:The School Art and Design continues to be the largest major count program at NMU and is the second largest state supported art and design program in Michigan.

Background:The School Art and Design continues to be the largest major count program at NMU and is the second largest state supported art and design program in Michigan.

Background:The School of Art and Design has experienced a one hundred and fifty-five (155%) percent growth in major count enrollments during the past 14 years.

Background:However, the 11 full-time faculty in 1998 to the 19 full-time faculty in 2012 represents only a 72% increase. If we had kept pace with the increased majors we would today have 28 plus full-time faculty!

At 38:1 Art and Design at NMU is the highest

student major/full-time faculty ratio in the

state.

Note of Comparison:It is interesting to note that in comparing our load to Eastern Michigan University (bylaws circle of comparison) we found that they have 450 Art and Design majors majors with 26 full-time faculty (17 students per faculty member). This past fall we had approximately 61% more majors with 7 fewer full-time faculty. (unrestricted enrollment)

Current Status:Thirty-eight majors per faculty inA+D is considerably over the university average of 21*advisees per faculty member and continues to place a serious strain on faculty from those studio areas that are in the greatest demand. If we were to average 21 student majors per faculty member we would require an additional 16 faculty members.

Faculty

Majors

Major counts (38 to1) and prospective majors are a true indication of the faculty load stressors because:

-Faculty Mentoring for AD 303 IAR and AD 403.

-Faculty Advising for courses and general support.(all studio instruction employs individual critiques)

-Faculty participation in Campus Visits.

Why Full-time Faculty and Major Counts are Important:

-Art and Design faculty begin their working relationship with prospective students even before they are NMU students. Faculty provided135 campus visits last year. -AD 303 Individual Art Review, required of all A+D majors, is a portfolio review by full time faculty each semester. Faculty meet with advisees many times to prepare for their presentation that includes statement and current work. Students must pass the course to enter upper level classes. Student mentoring is similar to the individual instruction of a music lesson.-AD 403 Senior Exhibition requires the faculty advisor to critique portfolios and statements that will be presented in the exhibition. Once again, student mentoring is similar to the individual instruction of a music lesson.

Why Full-time Faculty and Major Counts are Important:

graphic communication

Significant shift in emphasis from paper based graphic design to the development of website and apps for mobile platforms requires programing expertise.

computer art

Major shift in emphasis from broad software applications to more specific 3-D softwares that are used for video gaming, animation, special effects and photo compositing.

computer art/graphic design hybrid position:

Photoshop, HTML/CSS/Dreamweaver, InDesign, CMS (WordPress/Joomla/Drupal), Illustrator, Adobe Edge, xCode/AndroidDevKit/BlackBerryDevKit Flash, AfterEffects, 3D Imaging (Cinema 4D/Maya/etc), 3DSMax, Lightwave, FinalCut

Top 50 Undergraduate Game Design Programs

We believe this revised studio offering will be successful because:-there is increased demand for 3-D artists and designers*-we have a tradition of success in our current program with national recognition that will attract additional students.-we have an experienced faculty member who has developed this revised program and he also has a national reputation as a 3D artist!-we have state-of-the-art facilities and most important of all our program will be much less expensive when compared to other programs.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job market for 3D Artists is expected to grow at a rate of 8% through - 2020

Part 2:Position #2

Understaffed painting/drawing/illustration area requires full-time faculty to support over 100 majors. Additional full-time instructor with illustration skills would assist draw/paint competencies of computer art majors.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job market for Art Directors is expected to grow at a rate of 9% through - 2020

Conclusion:The School of Art and Design could add an MFA and additional majors in new studio areas such as clothing/textile design and interior design but can not consider more majors without meeting our current staffing needs.

Conclusion:The School of Art and Design continues to receive national and international recognition for our students, faculty and programs and believe we have earned the oppotunity to have additional faculty based upon the these accomplishments and our current enrollment status.
