Reference resources help us find information quickly!

So say you want to find out what the score of last night’s U of A football game? Where should you look?

How Do I know which ONe to Use?

Don’t worry.....It’s easy! Each reference material has special characteristics that make it perfect for finding specific information! Let’s check them

out!!!!

First up.......Periodicals

Contain articles

Many subjects and topics

Often published monthly or weekly

Current events, but not published daily

Examples:Sports Illustrated

Encyclopedia

Set of books organized alphabetically

Gives information about people, places and events in the past

Examples:World War II

Brazil

Newspaper

Daily current events

Local (Tucson)

Dictionary

You are all pros at dictionary skills!

Turn and whisper to your neighbor what we can look up in the dictionary.

Did you say definition, syllabication, pronunciation, part of speech and word origin?

You’ve got it!

Almanac

A book that contains facts and information

Published yearly (annually)

Only has information from certain year

Examples:Sport Stats

WeatherFarming

Major events of a year

Atlas

Book of maps

Locations

What the land is like (desert, rainforests, mountains, etc.)

What countries produce on their land (oil, coffee, wheat, corn)

Use this resources when you want to know:

Where a place is locatedWhat it is like there

Often times there are online versions of the other reference resources

THesaurus

You are all fantastic writers! So a thesaurus is the perfect tool to use to improve your word choice!

A thesaurus will give you synonyms and antonyms for a word. It will also tell the part of speech.
