Objectives

• Getting started with RefWorks– Connecting to RefWorks– Account creation

• RefWorks Interface– Navigating RefWorks– Customizing your database

• Getting information into RefWorks database– Exporting references– Importing references– Entering references manually

• Bibliography creation– Write-N-Cite method– Reference List method

????

• It is a web-based tool that allows you to create your own database of bibliographic references.

• It allows you to– Organize your research– Access your data anytime anywhere– Include citations while you write your paper/article/report– Speeds up your writing process– Build a bibliography in a variety of formats– Import references from many data sources

Let’s get started !!

Connecting to RefWorks

Off-Campus access

Navigating RefWorks

University of Cincinnati Libraries www.libraries.uc.edu/ceas

Enables addition of a reference to a folder

Enables global edit screen for adding, moving, deleting data for multiple references

Adds a single reference to MyList folder

Opens a reference into Edit mode

Creates an unformatted cite to paste into document

Opens a full reference

Creating & managing folders

• Organize references into meaningful categories.• Find a single reference or groups of similar references

easily.• Two types of folders

– Customized folders – No limit– RefWorks system folders

• RefWorks system folders– Last Imported folder – Tentative folder for all newly imported or

exported references into the database.– MyList folder – Tentative location for impending actions like

printing, deleting etc. It is emptied at the end of every RefWorks session.

Exporting references – Direct Export

• This option is supported by most major bibliographic databases

• Four basic steps– Select a database, conduct a search for articles– Mark the records you want to export– Go to the location where all the selected records are stored– Look for the “export” option and select “RefWorks” as store format

Learn for one, Use for all

• Examples– Random database from CEAS Library database collection– Google scholar

Importing references

• When to use it?– A bibliographic database does NOT offer RefWorks as a store format– Export option fails to work

• Save the imported references from a bibliographic database in a text (.txt) file and in a tagged format

• Tagged format – Specific format supported by RefWorks when you want to export data to share with other RefWorks users.

• After saving the data

• Open the PubMed database and save the references as a text file.

Manual entry of references

• When to use it?– A reference may not be available electronically– It is faster to enter one or two references manually rather than

exporting them electronically into the database

• Example (IEEE Style)G. Pevere, "Infrared Nation.” The International Journal of Infrared Design, vol. 33, pp. 56-99, Jan. 1979. Author(s), "Article title”. Journal Title, vol., no., page number(s), Month year.

Bibliography creation

• Two methods for creating bibliographies– Write-N-Cite method– List method

• Write-N-Cite method – Create in-text citations or footnotes and create a bibliography composed of references corresponding to the in-text citations or footnotes in compliance to a selected output style.

• List method – Identification of selected references from your RefWorks database and subsequently creating a bibliography from those references again in compliance to a selected output style.
