The region’s economic engine is the oil refinery ORLEN Lietuva. This company, located in Mažeikiai, is the biggest producer of petrol products in the Baltic States.
The presence of the oil industry has fueled the development of the metal working and machinery sectors in the region.
The region is home to the two largest domestic dairy brands Žemaitijos Pienas and Pieno Žvaigždės, whose production covers the entire spectrum of dairy products. Regional competence is so high that local brand Ingman was recently purchased by Unilever.
