SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

Second Great Awakening: religious revival that swept America in 1820’s

Anyone (rich or poor) could and should work toward a state of moral perfection

Emphasis on good works

NEW RELIGIONSNew religions are born due to the SGAMethodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Mormons, etc.

Mormon ChurchPolygamy: many spouses (wives)Persecuted and forced to move to Ohio and then to Utah

Emphasis on good works = Americans sought to improve many aspects of society
