Jehovah's W itnesses Charged with Extremism inCentral RussiaCHEBOKSARY, July 30 (RI A Novost i)

Authorities in the Russian Central Republic ofChuvashia opened a criminal case against tenJehovah's Witnesses for “establishing anextremist community,” the local investigationdepartment said.

According to investigators, the church opened abranch in Cheboksary, the capital of the republic,as well as in the towns of Novocheboksarsk,Kanash and Alatyr, where its members“distributed among the local residents bannedprinted materials…containing propaganda ofexclusivity and the superiority of Jehovah'sWitnesses over followers of other religions.”

Jehovah's Witnesses, known in the West forpersistent door-to-door evangelism, now facescharges of instigating religious hatred andhumiliating human’s dignity.

The Jehovah's Witnesses, which has some sevenmillion followers worldwide and 300,000 inRussia, have already been banned in a number ofRussian regions and in some former Sovietrepublics.

In May, similar charges were lodged against thegroup in the Russia’s Urals city of Orenburg.

Moscow’s branch of the Jehovah's Witnesses was dissolved by district court ruling in2004, but in 2010 the European Court of Human Rights declared the decision illegal.
