Ground Investigation –Humber CCS Pipeline – Railway crossing 2 National Grid Carbon Limited
762402 Rail Crossing 2 report rev01 4 Structural Soils Limited
1 INTRODUCTION
It is proposed to construct a pipeline from Stainforth (SE 661 119) in South Yorkshire, north east
to Barmston (TA 169 612) in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on the east coast south of
Bridlington, as part of a carbon capture and storage scheme.
Structural Soils Limited were instructed by National Grid Carbon Ltd (the Client) to carry out a
ground investigation along the proposed pipeline route. The results of the investigation are
presented in separate reports for each of the major crossing points i.e. rivers/canals, railways and
motorways, and also as a summary report for the whole route. This report details a section of the
route where the pipeline crosses the Selby to Hull railway line (Railway Crossing 2).
This report details the work carried out both on site and in the laboratory and gives
recommendations relating to the excavations for the installation of the pipeline, the bearing
capacity, and a selection of other soil parameters.
General discussion and recommendations can be found in Section 6 of this report. An
interpretation of the borehole logs and laboratory test results is presented in the Interpretative
Summary Sheets in Appendix B. These sheets give an assessment of excavation stability, bearing
capacity and drainage characteristics. It should be noted the excavation stability and drainage
characteristics have been assessed from the soil descriptions and classification tests and that no
trial pits were excavated or soakage tests conducted to substantiate these assessments.
The ground investigation has been carried out using cable percussion techniques of soft ground
boring, in general accordance with the recommendations of BS5930: 1999 Code of Practice for
Site Investigations: Including amendment 2 (2010). Whilst every attempt is made to record full
details of the strata encountered in the exploratory holes, techniques of hole formation and
sampling will inevitably lead to disturbance, mixing or loss of material in some soils and rocks.
A comprehensive desk study, other than an inspection of geological maps, has not been
requested or undertaken as part of this investigation. Nor has a preliminary risk assessment been
completed.
The chemical testing of samples of soil and water for contamination has not formed part of this
investigation. Similarly no testing has been undertaken to detect the presence of gas in the
ground.
Ground Investigation –Humber CCS Pipeline – Railway crossing 2 National Grid Carbon Limited
762402 Rail Crossing 2 report rev01 5 Structural Soils Limited
All information, comments and opinions given in this report are based on the ground conditions
encountered during the site work, and on the results of laboratory and field tests performed
during the investigation. However, there may be conditions at the site that have not been taken
into account, such as unpredictable soil strata, contaminant concentrations, and water conditions
between or below exploratory holes. It should be noted that groundwater levels usually vary due
to seasonal and/or other effects and may at times differ to those measured during the
investigation.
This report was prepared by Structural Soils Ltd for the sole and exclusive use of National Grid
Carbon Limited in response to particular instructions. Any other parties using the information
contained in this report do so at their own risk and any duty of care to those parties is excluded.

2 SITE DESCRIPTION
2.1 Location and Topography
The site is located in the Humberhead Levels approximately 2.50 km south east of the village of
Wressle, East Riding of Yorkshire (see Site Location Map in Appendix A). The British National
Grid reference of the site is SE 736 307.
The site is at the location where the proposed pipeline route crosses the Selby to Hull railway
line. The railway runs east west on a low embankment approximately 2.00m in height at the
point of intersection. Trees and shrubs are present associated with the railway corridor.
The surrounding area is level and comprises arable fields.
2.2 Geology
The published geological records for the area show the site to be underlain by superficial
deposits comprising glaciolacustrine deposits of the Quaternary Period. These are shown as silt
and clay. These deposits were formerly known as ’25 ft Drift of Vale of York’.
The superficial deposits are underlain at an unspecified depth by strata of the Sherwood
Sandstone Group of the Permo-Triassic Period. These comprise mainly sandstone with
subordinate mudstone bands and were formerly known as the Bunter Sandstone.
The published geological records consulted were the British Geological Survey (BGS) map
England and Wales Series Sheet 79 Goole Solid and Drift, scale 1:50,000, published 1973; The
BGS Onshore GeoIndex (http://www.bgs.ac.uk/geoindex/); and the BGS lexicon.

3 FIELDWORK
3.1 Scope of Works
The ground investigation comprised six cable percussion boreholes (BH115 to BH119)
completed between 16 August and 30 October 2012 at locations shown on the Exploratory Hole
Location Plan in Appendix A.
The scope of the investigation and the borehole positions were selected by the Client. The
boreholes were set out by Structural Soils Limited, and adjusted where necessary to take account
of buried or overhead services, or other restrictions. The choice of investigation equipment,
sampling and in-situ testing details were agreed between Structural Soils and the Client.
The exploratory holes were logged by an engineer in general accordance with the
recommendations of BS5930: 1999 (2010 Amendment 2, which incorporates the requirements of
BS EN ISO 14688-1, 14688-2 and 14689-1). Detailed descriptions, together with relevant
comments, are given in the logs included in Appendix B.
Prior to the commencement of any exploratory hole or intrusive test a scan was carried out using
a cable avoidance tool (CAT) and signal generator (‘genny’). An inspection pit was then
excavated using hand tools to a depth of 1.20m.
3.2 Cable Percussion Boreholes
The boreholes were drilled using a cable tool percussion drilling rig and were 150mm diameter.
The depths of the boreholes were between 11.00m and 15.20m and they encountered clays, silts,
sands and weathered bedrock.
General purpose undisturbed samples (100mm diameter) were recovered from the cohesive strata
in the boreholes. Small disturbed and bulk soil samples were taken from the boreholes at regular
intervals.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were carried out at regular intervals, in accordance with BS EN
ISO 22476-3. The recorded SPT N-values are summarised on the borehole logs. The SPT
hammers used were calibrated for efficiency; a calibration certificate for each hammer used is
included in Appendix C. The SPT results are presented Appendix C in tabular format on the
Summary of Standard Penetration Tests, on which the normalised N60 values are also reported
(equivalent N-value for a hammer delivering 60% of the theoretical drop energy). The serial
numbers of the hammers used for each test are stated on the borehole logs and the summary
table. Plots showing both N and N60 values versus depth are also included.

3.3 Backfill, Monitoring Wells and Installations
On completion 19mm diameter standpipe piezometers were installed in BH117 and BH118A the
design having been specified by the Client. The installation details are shown on the exploratory
hole logs in Appendix B.
On completion the remaining boreholes were backfilled with arisings and topped up with
bentonite pellets as necessary.
3.4 Surveying
On completion of the works, a survey of the exploratory hole locations was undertaken by a
specialist surveyor using Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. The coordinates and
elevation of each exploratory hole were measured relative to British National Grid and Ordnance
Datum respectively, and these are shown on the exploratory hole logs contained in Appendix B
which have been printed with a reduced level column.
3.5 Monitoring and Post Fieldwork Environmental Sampling
Groundwater levels were recorded in the monitoring wells on 5 December 2012 and 17 January
2013. The results together with the temporal weather conditions are tabulated in Appendix D.

4 LABORATORY TESTING
Samples for potential geotechnical testing were returned to the company’s laboratory in
Castleford. Laboratory testing was scheduled by Structural Soils Limited.
Geotechnical laboratory testing was generally carried out in accordance with BS1377: 1990,
Methods of Test for Soils for Civil Engineering Purposes, Parts 1 to 8, unless indicated
otherwise. Where non-standard procedures have been undertaken, this is recorded on the report
sheet. The results are reported in tabular and/or graphical form and included as Appendix B of
this report, behind the relevant borehole logs.

5 GROUND CONDITIONS
5.1 General
A complete record of the strata encountered is given on the boreholes logs contained in
Appendix B; these show the site to be underlain by a descending sequence of topsoil over clay
with silt and sand laminae considered to be glaciolacustrine deposits and is consistent with the
anticipated geology of the site. The borings undertaken were terminated within superficial
deposits, and did not conclusively prove any underlying solid geological materials; therefore the
bedrock geology and vertical extents of the superficial deposits remain unproven with the
possible exception of BH118.
5.2 Topsoil
All of the boreholes initially encountered topsoil, which varied in thickness from 0.10m to
0.40m.
5.3 Glaciolacustrine Deposits
Glaciolacustrine deposits were proved to a depth of between 13.00m and 20.30m beneath the site
in all six boreholes. In general they consisted of firm to stiff clays containing laminae of silt,
sand, and mixtures thereof. Borehole BH118 encountered from 19.80m to 20.10m medium
dense brown grey silty sand containing shell fragments, which are presumed to be
glaciolacustrine in origin. The base of BH118 encountered medium dense orange brown sand
with a subordinate gravel content, which may, or may not, represent the uppermost margin of
weathered Sherwood Sandstone. The limited extent of boring into this stratum in a single
borehole, and an SPT ‘N’ value of 24 (medium dense) provide insufficient data upon which
conclude with any certainty that bedrock has been encountered.
5.4 Groundwater
On encountering groundwater boring operations were suspended for a period of 20 minutes and
records of water strikes and rises recorded, these are reported on the exploratory hole logs in
Appendix B.
Shallow groundwater strikes between 3.20m and 3.50m below ground level were recorded in all
boreholes. Deeper groundwater strikes were recorded at 11.00m and 11.50m in BH118 and
BH118A respectively and a groundwater seepage was recorded at 10.70m in BH116. Double
standpipe installations were installed in BH117 and BH118; installation details are given on the
relevant borehole log in Appendix B.
Ground Investigation –Humber CCS Pipeline – Railway crossing 2 National Grid Carbon Limited
762402 Rail Crossing 2 report rev01 11 Structural Soils Limited
The standpipes have been monitored on two occasions since installation. The results are
tabulated below:
Borehole No Base of pipe (m) Date Standing water level (m)
Below ground level Reduced level (AOD)
BH117 3.50 05/12/12 0.31 4.43
BH117 11.00 05/12/12 1.51 3.23
BH117 3.50 17/01/13 0.31 4.43
BH117 11.00 17/01/13 1.51 3.23
BH118A 3.50 05/12/12 0.64 4.10
BH118A 11.00 05/12/12 3.49 1.25
BH118A 3.50 17/01/13 0.60 4.14
BH118A 11.00 17/01/13 3.58 1.16
5.5 Geotechnical Properties
The results of the tests to determine the Atterberg limits indicate the glaciolacustrine clay to be
generally of intermediate to high plasticity with liquid limit (WL) in the range 40% to 60% and
the plastic limit (WP) to be in the range 16% to 20%. Three samples exhibited low plasticity
with WL in the range of 31% to 34%, and WP in the range 16% to 20%. The modified plasticity
index indicates the majority of the glaciolacustrine clay to be of medium volume change
potential, with only the three samples of low plasticity clay being of low volume change
potential.
The glaciolacustrine deposits are of generally firm to stiff consistency at shallow depth becoming
firm with depth.
Triaxial tests returned undrained shear strength values of generally 25kPa to 39kPa indicating
soils of low strength. Two samples lie outside this range; BH115 at 3.00m returned a value of
15kPa (very low strength), and BH118 at 5.00m returned a value of 65kPa (medium strength).
There is a general increase in undrained shear strength with depth. This is also recorded in the
SPT ‘N’ values which show a general increase in resistance with depth to approximately 10.00m;
below this they remain relatively consistent.
Two consolidation tests were completed and the results are tabulated in Appendix B; the
coefficient of volume compressibility (mv) indicates the clays to be of medium to high
compressibility.

6 DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
6.1 Proposed Development
The proposed development will, it is understood, comprise the design and construction of a
pipeline and associated temporary works as part of a carbon capture and storage scheme. No
details of method of construction are known at this time, however, it is understood that the
minimum cover depths at the various crossings will be as follows:
Crossing Minimum cover (m)
Ditch 1.70
Track 1.70
Minor Road 2.00
Major Road 2.15
River / Canal 2.00
Railway 4.30
The results of the investigation have been assessed on a borehole by borehole basis and are
reported on the Interpretation Summary Sheets presented along with the borehole logs in
Appendix B. These sheets give an assessment of excavation, stability, bearing capacity and
drainage characteristics.
6.2 Site Preparation and Excavation
The glaciolacustrine soils encountered have been assessed as being of easy excavatability and
should be readily excavated with conventional excavation plant.
The stability of excavations will vary depending on the soil type. Perched water was
encountered in a number of boreholes at shallow depth within the sand deposits and this may
have an adverse affect of excavation stability. Recommendations relating to the initial stability
of excavations and the angle of temporary safe slopes are given in the interpretation summary
sheets. The recommendations are based upon the general soil classifications given in the CIRIA
Report 97, Trenching Practice.
All excavations should be planned and due consideration should be given to providing temporary
support or suitable battering. Excavations should be regularly inspected by a competent person
to ensure continued safety. Further advice on the safety of excavations is given in Health and
Safety in Construction.
Ground Investigation –Humber CCS Pipeline – Railway crossing 2 National Grid Carbon Limited
762402 Rail Crossing 2 report rev01 13 Structural Soils Limited
6.3 Pipe Jacking and Microtunneling
As with trenching, the ease and efficiency with which these operations can be carried out
depends largely on the type of soils and rock encountered and the prevailing water table.
Given the minimum depth of cover beneath a railway crossing of 4.30m any tunnelling/pipe
jacking should be within the clay horizon. It should be noted that there may be sand horizons
interbedded with the clay which may adversely affect the tunnelling/pipe jacking operation.
With the exception of the shallow perched water the standing groundwater is currently at a level
which should not affect any deep excavations for tunnelling/pipejacking at the proposed level.
It is recommended that the advice of experienced contractors be sought on the suitability of the
methods for the conditions. Any principals of dewatering should follow the guidelines given in
CIRIA C515 and guidance below.
6.4 Drainage and Floatation
The interpretative summary sheet indicates the likely drainage characteristics of the soil
encountered. These characteristics are based upon the general soil classifications. No trial pits or
soakage tests were carried out which would determine the drainage characteristics in the field.
Granular soils would be expected to generally have good draining characteristics. However, in
many cases the grading, density and silt or clay content will render granular soils practically
impermeable.
It is recommended that the facility for positive drainage be provided within the pipe trenches. It
should be borne in mind that with the proposed size of pipe and trench there is a strong
possibility of surface water flooding excavations in areas where they act as a natural collecting
point, and unsecured pipes being at risk of floatation.
Advice on dealing with groundwater is given in CIRIA Report C515, Groundwater Control –
Design and Practice.
Ground Investigation –Humber CCS Pipeline – Railway crossing 2 National Grid Carbon Limited
762402 Rail Crossing 2 report rev01 14 Structural Soils Limited
6.5 Bearing Capacity
The interpretive summary sheets indicate the likely bearing capacity of soils encountered. These
characteristics are based upon the interpretation of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) results,
All of the soils encountered should readily support the pipeline itself. No made ground was
encountered during the investigation. However, should made ground or peat be encountered
during construction below the pipeline formation, it is recommended it is removed and replaced
with suitable compacted material.
6.6 Shrinkage and Swelling
The Atterberg Limits tests performed on samples have been used to assess plasticity, which is
recorded on the summary sheets. After correction where necessary for their >0.425mm fraction,
these samples show predominantly medium volume change potentials with changes in moisture
content, according to the criteria of NHBC Standards, Chapter 4.2 Building Near Trees.

Triaxial (TXL) cu (kPa) The undrained shear strengths determined from unconsolidated, undrained triaxial compression test are presented. Some of the samples were unsuitable due to disturbance caused by heavy driving due to the presence of coarse material.
Point Load Index (PTL) (MPa) and Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) (MPa) The range of Point Load Indices and UCS results are presented for a given rock stratum / sub stratum. Point load indices have been converted to UCS by multiplying by 20 and are shown in brackets. Results from UCS laboratory tests are given in italics.
Bearing Capacity (kPa)
The bearing capacity in clay soils has been calculated for a nominal factor of safety of 3. The shear strength has been assessed from the results of the standard penetration tests (using the relationship - shear strength = 5 x N Value) and the results of the triaxial tests. The bearing capacity has not been assessed for peat. The bearing capacity in granular soils has been calculated for a nominal 25 mm settlement using the relationship - bearing capacity = 10 x N value. Where high N values are thought to result from coarse granular material the bearing capacity has been reduced and it has also been reduced where the underlying stratum is significantly weaker.
Earthworks Classification The earthworks classification is based on Tables 6/1 and 6/2 of the Specification for Highways Works following and assessment of the grading and other relevant laboratory testing.
Excavatability The ease of excavation will depend on the type of plant used and the size of excavation. It assumes that there is no groundwater present or that dewatering has been carried out.
Soil stratum- Easy No problems anticipated using back actor plant for trench
Moderate
The presence of very coarse material e.g. boulders, may cause more difficult and slower digging.
Rock stratum- The excavatability of rock strata has been determined from the Pettifer and Fookes revised rock excavatability chart (1994), reproduced below. The ease of excavation is determined by considering the rock strength and fracture frequency. Where no point load results are available then interpreted values are indicated by an asterix (*).

Excavation Stability
The excavation stability is based on CIRIA Report 97, Trenching Practice, table for safe temporary slopes, the relevant section is reproduced below. The suggested slopes include a factor of safety and steeper slopes could be used for activities which do not involve man entry and where the excavation plant is remote from the excavation - e.g. extended boom excavators.
Ground Description Safe temporary slopes

For granular soils it assumes that groundwater is adequately controlled to prevent loss of material to the excavation and consequent instability.
For the stiffer clay soils it may be possible to use vertical side slopes.
Excavations should be assessed by a competent person.
Drainage Characteristics
Good Clean granular materials, i.e. insignificant or no clay or silt content.
Poor Granular soils with significant fines content and silts.
Practically Impermeable
Clays.
Depth to Standing Water Level (m bgl) The water levels of each strike depth, rise depth and, where available, the monitored levels are included.
General
N/A Not applicable
It should be noted that the assessments are based on the main description for both soils and rocks to give an overview and general guidance. There may be details shown on the logs which could have an effect on the assessments. Similarly there may be ground conditions between boreholes which could have an affect on the assessment.
