Innovation in research
Fabrication of Porous Matrix Humidifier for PEM Fuel Cell
The working fluids in a PEM Fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen gases have to be
humidified before they are supplied to the cell. This humidification helps the membrane,
the heart of the PEM Fuel cell, to maintain its water content. If the water content of
membrane decreases to a state of dry condition, the cell will be permanently damaged.
The conventionally used bubble humidifier is not efficient, though it is simple. As a
substitute for the bubble humidifier a Porous Matrix Humidifier has been developed as
part of MTech dissertation works at IIT Roorkee. This humidifier has been tested for
various load conditions of the cell and it is observed to operate more efficiently than the
bubble humidifier.
Porous Matrix Evaporative Cooler-Humidifier for PEM Fuel Cell
The PEM Fuel cell generates heat equal to the power output and hence the cell
has to be cooled in order to maintain its optimum operating temperature to prevent
formation of hot spots in the membrane. A single unit performing cooling as well as
humidification is being developed as part of MTech dissertation at IIT Roorkee.
Global Matrxi-free Finite Element Algorithm
5
A finite element algorithm without the necessity of forming global matrix has
been developed, by storing all matrices at element level itself. This has enabled the
solution of three-dimensional CFD problem on a personal computer.
M.Tech course seminar
The M.Tech students have to be trained to read and understand research articles in a
systematic manner. For this purpose a course seminar has been introduced whenever I
teach a course for MTech students. Every student will be given a specific research article
recently published in a journal of thermal engineering field. A month time will be given
to the students to understand the contents of the paper. In this connection instructions and
guidance will be provided to the students. Later each student has to give a seminar for 15
minutes on the topic assigned to him. Questions will be asked to test his understanding.
This practice has been followed for years and the feedback from the students is highly
encouraging.
