RichardDyer(born1945)isanEnglishacademiccurrentlyholdingaprofessorshipintheDepartmentofFilmStudiesatKing'sCollegeLondon.Specializingincinema(particularlyItaliancinema),queertheory,andtherelationshipbetweenentertainmentandrepresentationsofrace,sexuality,andgender,hewaspreviouslyafacultymemberoftheFilmStudiesDepartmentattheUniversityofWarwickformanyyearsandhasheldanumberofvisitingprofessorshipsintheUnitedKingdom,theUnitedStates,Italy,Sweden,Denmark,andGermany.[1]

BorninLeedsandraisedinthesuburbsofLondonduringthe1940sand1950s,DyerstudiedFrench(aswellasEnglish,German,andPhilosophy)attheUniversityofStAndrew's.HethenwentontoearnhisdoctoraldegreeinEnglishattheUniversityofBirminghamsCenterforContemporaryCulturalStudies.BeforecomingtoKing'sCollegeLondonin2006,hewasaProfessorofFilmStudiesattheUniversityofWarwickandavisitingprofessoratthefollowinginstitutions:UniversityofPennsylvaniasAnnenbergSchoolofCommunicationsin1985theIstitutoUniversitarioOrientalein1987StockholmUniversityin1996,2006,and2010theUniversityofCopenhagenin2002NewYorkUniversityin2003theUniversityofBergamoin2004BauhausUniversitatWeimarin2009theUniversityofSt.Andrewsin2011.Throughouthiscareer,hehastaughtcoursesonraceandethnicity,film,Stardom,Hollywood,Italiancinema,FedericoFellini,andrepresentation.[2]Heisalsoveryinvolvedingraduateeducation,andhassuperviseddissertationsonsubjectsrangingfromthehistoryofgaycinemaduringthe1970stoexperimentalanimation.[3]Havingalreadypublishedwidelyonwhiteness,film,andlesbianandgaycultures,DyerrecentlypublishedjournalarticlesandbookchaptersonsonginItaliancinemaandwhitenessinthefilm,DirtyDancing.[4]
