The mini transat is a yacht race held biannually in Open design 21ft yachts across the Atlantic ocean

One of the most radical races in the world that sailors can participate in!

The ManThe Man Richard Hewson 28 Years of Age Grew up in Lindisfarne Bay Tasmania Sailing since Age of 6 Competed in many national and

international dinghy regattas Extensive racing of yachts in Australia,

US, Mediterranean and UK including Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races and Fastnett Races

Ex Royal Australian Navy Mine Clearance Diving Officer

Master Mariner Class IV Commercial Diver III Currently studying for International

Master < 500 GT

The boatThe boat Mini Transat boats are at the cutting edge of

yacht design and are built from light weight materials to the following specifications:– Length 6.5m– Beam 3m– Bottom of keel to

top of mast 14m– Max Draft 3m– Weight 850kg– Unsinkable

ConditionsConditions The Bay of Biscay is famous for

its trying conditions and always promises excitement and tests for those who choose to take it on.

The trades of The Atlantic used by sailors to surf across the ocean.

Sailors must balance pushing their boat to the limit and not braking the boat

Choosing the path through the Doldrums is considered a gamble by some sailors

QUALIFICATIONQUALIFICATION Just to qualify for the

Trans Atlantic race sailors must first complete a 1000nm qualifying passage

Sailors must then perform well in a number of qualifying races (5 per year), covering at least 1000nm

In France alone every race will be covered on national television, written in every newspaper, advertised in every shop and restaurant window and shown on massive billboards on the roadside.

The mini transat race attracts huge media attention due to its extreme status

20% of the boat and sails are required for race authorities
