RIGID

PAVEMENTRigid pavement: Pavement has certain degree of “beam strength” that permits

them to span or “bridge over” some minor irregularities in the subgrade or

subbase on wich they are are rest.

Qualities of concrete pavement

Carry almost unlimited amounts of

any type of traffic with ease, comfort

and safety. Surfaces are smooth, dust free and

skid resistant High degree of visibility for both day

and night ow maintenance cost  better permanency

Construction of Base/ Sub-base

A base/ sub-base to the concrete pavement provides uniform and reasonably firm support,  prevents mud-pumping , and

acts as capillary cut-off.

As per IRC:15 (2002), sub-base coul be of t!ree t"pes #it!

(i) Granular material (for example, brick soling ith one layer of sand under it,

!"#, ell graded granular materials etc.)

(ii) $tabili%ed soil

(iii) $emi-rigid material, (for example, lime burnt clay pu%%olana concrete, lime fly-

ash concrete, lean cement concrete roller compacted concrete etc.).

$r" lean ce%ent concrete as sub-base()&he thickness of ', generally recommended is *++mm or *+mm()&he maximum aggregate to cement ratio is **.()&he average compressive strength of ' cubes at days, should not be less

than *+ #a, tested on samples and individual compressive strength should not

be less than . #a, at days

0igid pavements can be classified into four types

1ointed plain concrete pavement (1),  1ointed reinforced concrete pavement (10),

ontinuous reinforced concrete pavement (0), and

 re-stressed concrete pavement ().
