Rijksmuseum Building Foundation Renovation
Supporting civil structure for the renovation of the iconic Rijksmuseum
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam RenovationIn 2009, TWD was proud to be part of the large-scale renovation of the National Museum of the Netherlands (i.e. Rijksmuseum). We were sought out by Freyssinet Nederland BV to design a temporary civil construction. This construction would support the arcade columns with very limited deformation tolerance and avoid damage to this historical landmark built in 1885.
Supporting and constraining a 125-year old building with less than 2 mm displacement during a major renovation is quite a challenge, but we accepted this challenge providing the jacking support and stability frame designs for the foundation of the museum.
The steel supports were used as a temporary foundation for the museum. In the new de¬sign of the museum, the existing basement foundation under the arcade was replaced with a new one. The original brick columns supporting the ground floor were replaced with smaller concrete bricks. This increased the amount of free space in the museum basement. In the end, a total of 24 supports and 2 stability frames were placed with a total jacking capacity of 3000 tonnes.
Project highlights
• Historical landmark of Amsterdam
• Temporary jacking supports and stability frame
• Replace the masonry foundations with slender concrete columns
• 3000-tonne jacking capacity
• Millimeter precision jacking
