Jeep goes through yield sign, crashes into school bus near BentleyAn early morning colli-
sion on Tues., May 17 be-tween a school bus loaded with children and a jeep has resulted in charges being laid against the driv-er of the jeep for failing to obey a yield sign.
The accident occurred two miles south of Bentley on RR 12 at the intersection of Township Road 402 in Lacombe County.
Sylvan Lake RCMP along with the Bentley Fire Department and Lacombe County Patrol were called
to the scene.A press release from Cpl.
James Allemekinders from Sylvan Lake RCMP states police discovered that a Jeep TJ travelling east bound on Twp RD 402 went through a yield sign at which point it was struck by a north-bound school bus.
Dust may have been a factor in the accident, said Allemekinders, adding there was a vehicle ahead of the jeep and the accident occurred at a gravel inter-section.
There were 17 students ranging from Kindergarten
to Grade 9 in the bus which was on its way to Lacombe Christian School.
Neither the children nor the bus driver were hurt in the crash.
The driver of the jeep, who was the only occu-pant of the vehicle, suf-fered minor injuries, but has been released from hospital.
The names of those in-volved in the accident are not being released.
The school bus is operat-ed by Prairie Bus Lines.
Failing to obey a yield sign carries a traffi c fi ne of $388.

Drug traffi cking, stolen vehicles and impaired drivers keep
RCMP busyRimbey RCMP have had a busy
spring dealing with several offences ranging from drug charges to vehicle theft and impaired driving.
On May 17, a search warrant at a Bluffton residence disclosed a large quantity of drugs and weapons at the home.
As a result of the search, a 78-year-old male has been charged with traf-fi cking drugs.
Earlier this month, a vehicle was
reported speeding and swerving on Hwy. 20 north of Rimbey.
The male driver was pulled over by a Rimbey RCMP offi cer within the town limits.
It was later discovered the driver presented the RCMP offi cer with a false identifi cation.
Further investigation into the mat-ter showed that the intoxicated driv-er had stolen another car, abandoned it, broke into a house in Parkland Beach, drank liquor he found in the house, stole some clothes and took
off in another stolen car.The RCMP was able to fi nd his ac-
tual identity as he left identifi cation in the fi rst stolen car which had been abandoned.
Charges included obstructing a po-lice offi ce, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle while disqualifi ed, break and enter, theft of motor vehicle, mis-chief and possession of a stolen ve-hicle.
The charged individual is to appear in Rimbey provincial court June 3.

Fruit, vegetable or crop production may not be as innocent as it is portrayed to be
Fruit, vegetable or crop production may not be as innocent as it is por-trayed to be
A couple of summers ago I was fi shing on Pigeon Lake with some relatives. The day was coming to a close and we boated back to the launch. On the shore there was a young gal working or volunteer-ing for Fish and Wildlife Alberta: she was per-
Faith, hope and learning to use a drill
The garden box began as a germ of an idea planted in my husband’s head by me.
“You know,” I said one day, conversationally, as I was chopping to-matoes and lettuce and little green onions and throwing them into a salad bowl at my kitch-en counter, “I sure would like one of those little garden boxes like Jill has.” (Jill is child num-ber three). Last year she and her dad hammered,

nailed and sawed two garden boxes together. Her little vegetable gar-den, planted by herself and her three small boys, was truly a wonder to be-hold and the vegetables they grew rivaled Jack in the Beanstock, so well did they fl ourish.
My husband comment-ed the same way he usu-ally does when I toss an idea out along with the salad.
He said nothing. But a few days later,
over a glass of wine after supper, he showed me a rough version of a garden box scribbled on the back of an envelope with a ball point pen that actually worked that I found in the junk drawer.
“What do you think?” he asked.
“Cool,” I said. “I think it would be very cool.”
He explained to me how the box would work. He said, pointing to the hastily drawn diagram, how it would have two
little boxes running down the length of it, joined by a box across the front, leaving a little walkway between the two boxes.
I looked at the picture and still didn’t get it.
“Cool,” I said, anyway. “I like that idea.”
And so it came to be that the lumber for the little garden box got ordered and cut to the proper dimensions inside my husband’s giant tool-box that is really sup-posed to be a two-car garage.
That was where I came in.
I hauled all the pieces of wood out to the south side of the house, drop-ping them in a somewhat random heap because they were heavy. I then looked at them some-what dubiously like I had no idea how they were all going to come together.
I looked at them in this way because it was true.
I had no idea. But, my husband, the
visionary, apparently knew. He handed me this electric screw thing and some screws and said to put board A (the short board) together with the this frame thing which was later to be screwed to board B and then pile them on top of each other and it would all be good.
I said okay. And so it began. It was quite horrible,
actually.I’m here to tell you
there are some things I can do and do well.
Using an electric drill is not one of them.
“Hold it straight,” my husband said. “I am,” I moaned. “It’s not work-ing, I whined.
“I think you are actual-ly unscrewing the screw,” he said, patiently.
I resisted the urge to scream and yell and throw the harmless look-ing drill very far away and tried again. And again.
Despite the fact it has
taken me twice as long as it would take most people, the little box is almost fi nished now and soon we will fi ll it up with some nice black dirt from somewhere and plant lit-tle seeds and then one day I won’t have to go to Sobeys to buy the stuff to make a salad.
I will just go to the south side of my house where my little garden grows in neat little rows. And I will pick the lettuce, radishes and little green onions and make a salad, right then, right there. And the neighbours will see me and say stuff like, “been gardening long?”
And I will wipe my dirty hands on my blue jeans and look up from my labours, all properly humble and say “no, not really.”
But inside I will be all happy and proud and will forget all about how inept I am with a drill.
At least that’s my plan. Time will tell if it works!
forming a simple fi sh-ing survey. What was caught? How big? Those sort of questions.
I asked the young gal if her survey was com-missioned because of the blooming blue-green algae on the lake during that period in the sum-mer. Not directly, she said. I then asked her what was the cause of the blue-green algae. Thankfully she didn’t give me a full-blown politician’s answer. She claimed that many fac-tors contribute to the blooms of algae, but it was mostly caused by rain water runoff and taking fertilizer off the farm fi elds into bodies of water. It made sense to me.
If I remember correct-ly there were adviso-ries warning against the consummation of fi sh caught in Pigeon Lake,
but the warnings didn’t stop me from chowing down on some fresh cooked fi sh in the camp-site. I didn’t die or get sick—knock on wood.
I like to eat meat, and I do my best to repress any thoughts I may have over the hormone con-tent, the farming condi-tions, or the manner in which the animal was killed before processing. I certainly do not think about where the meat came from once the fi sh fi llet, the chicken breast, the beef ribs, or the pork chops hit my barbeque rack; I’m more inclined to think about what sort of spices or sauces I need from the kitchen to sea-son my meal.
Many people don’t like to eat animals that were slaughtered in an in-humane manner; some people don’t eat any an-imals at all; and some
people won’t eat or con-sume products contain-ing animal by-products. I don’t share these values or attitudes, but I under-stand why some people do.
There is one thing that the blue-green algae conversation led me to think about: fruit, vege-table, or crop production isn’t as innocent as the vegetarians would like me to believe. I’m not thinking about the mom and pop farms or the friendly roadside green houses. I’m talking about the massive industrial farms throughout North America that employ hundreds, if not thou-sands, of employees. The fruit, vegetable, or farm products harvested from those operations feed a lot of people.
Whether it is a herd of cows or an orchard of orange trees, both styles
of farming will utilize massive amounts of re-sources. Orchards need to spray for pests and cattle farmers need to immunize livestock from illness. Both methods of farming require a lot of space to raise cattle or grow a crop. The fossil fuels burnt by transpor-tation trucks aren’t con-scious or conscientious: it’s all weight. And prod-uct storage may require a climate controlled en-vironment so the orang-es don’t rot or the steaks don’t spoil.
Simply adopting a dif-ferent diet isn’t going to curb the substantial re-source usage. Mass con-sumption is here to stay as it would seem. I don’t know if picking an or-ange off a tree branch is the same as putting a bolt into the head of a cow. Both methods end an organic form of life.

Ponoka County council has pulled back on capital requests this year, and the town will have to dig deep into its own pockets to come up with the funding needed for the new roof for the Peter Lougheed Community Centre.
While the town had budgeted $385,000 for the project, they were hopeful the county would come up with some funds to help cover costs.
However, Ponoka County CAO Charlie Cutforth says that isn’t going to happen.
He said county council needs to keep capital spending to a minimum and while their priority in the past has been to help out outlying communities, times are tough.
“We are in a fl uid, volatile situation right now,” he said. The CAO added the wildfi res in Fort McMurray will be a huge added expense to the province that was not anticipated, and, no doubt, the spinoffs of the economic drain will be felt throughout the province.
Cutforth explained the county was fortunate to receive $3 million in MSI funding this year, but there is no guarantee future funding will continue.
The roof to the community centre was not the only capital project denied by the county.
Speedway Race Park was turned down for $125,000, the Ag Centre’s request for $250,000 over three years was denied as was $125,000 for Pas Ka Poo Park and $140,000 to Liberty Hall.
The town has budgeted $385,000 for the community centre roof.
Cooper Roofi ng has been hired to replace the roof and work could begin on the project by early summer.
Community director Cindy Bowie said once two HVAC units are installed on the roof, work can begin.
“I’m hoping by the end of May,” she said. The new roof will take approximately two months to com-
plete depending on the weather.Mayor Rick Pankiw said he understands Ponoka County’s
decision, adding he is grateful for all the help the county has given the community in the past.
He noted that all municipalities are facing diffi cult times, due to the economic downturn.

Work bee well attended
A community work bee held last weekend, spear-headed by the Rimbey Lions Club went over well, with good partici-pation from groups and individuals.
Lions club member Terry Von Hollen said 28 people participated in the work bee, which in-volved work around the ball diamonds including painting the fences.
Individuals from Victim Services, the Slo pitch Association and Rimbey Lions Club participated as well as individuals from local businesses. Some evacuees from Fort McMurray also helped out.
Funding for paint and supplies came from Rimbey Lions, The Town of Rimbey, The Co-op, Home Hardware and the Agricultural Society.
Von Hollen said the Lions Club has dedicat-ed May as a work bee month, noting if people gave just two hours of their time to beautify-ing the town much work would be accomplished.

Lots owned by Stan Cummings rezoned after delays and complaints
Three lots owned by Stan Cummings situated across the street from the new senior lodge, now under construction, have fi nally been rezoned.
At its meeting May 9, council gave third reading to rezone the lots from R3 to R1.
Under the R1 zoning, new detached residenc-es, ready-to-move modu-lar homes, rental suites, granny suites, home offi c-es, public parks and recre-ation areas are allowed.
R3 allows for duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, row housing, multiple unit housing, granny suits, home offi ces and public parks and recreation uses.
The land surrounding the rezoned lots is country residential and institution-al and public uses lands which will house the fu-ture Rimoka seniors’ lodge.
Cummings said he never intended for these lands to be zoned R3 and his application in 2014 did not specify the re-designation.
“It was originally desig-nated as R1 property and changed to R3 without my consent,” said Cummings.
In her report to coun-cil, development offi cer Liz Armitage reported a Jan. 8, 2008 bylaw 824/07 re-des-ignated this area from UX to R1. On April 14, 2014, bylaw 894/14 re-designated this area from R1 to R3.
Staff noted that the written application from Cummings did not in-clude these lands, however they appear to have been changed through the pro-cess.
A review of the public hearing record from 2014 indicates no-one currently expressing concerns with the amendment returning to the lands to R1 spoke at that public hearing.
Earl Repas, who owns land adjacent to Cummings spoke against the rezoning at the public hearing held in April.
“R1 is an incompatible land use to the existing land use of my acreage and also the other adjacent land owner, Mr. Grutterink, who operates a cattle feed lot,” he said. “I own and operate a legitimate busi-ness (Rimbey Towing) on my acreage where I store wrecked vehicles as a component of the business since Sept. 15/2009.”
Chairman of the Rimoka Housing Authority Board Paul McLauchlin spoke in favor of the rezoning.
“It (the rezoning) doesn’t affect our development (the new lodge),” he said.

Fire ban and OHV restrictions were revised ahead of long weekend
Wet and cool weather across parts of Alberta has reduced the fi re haz-ard to a point where the province has adjusted the boundaries of the fi re ban and off-highway vehicle (OHV) restrictions.
Effective at 4 p.m. May 19, the fi re ban and OHV restrictions were no lon-ger in effect for much of the province. They did, however, remain in ef-fect for the Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray Forest Areas of northeastern Alberta.
In the parts of Alberta’s Forest Protection Area where the fi re ban is still in effect, portable propane fi re pits and gas or pro-pane stoves and barbe-cues designed for cooking or heating are allowed. All open fi res are still prohib-ited. All fi re permits have been suspended in those areas and no new permits will be issued until fur-ther notice.
Cities, towns, villag-
es, summer villages, or federal lands, such as national parks may still have fi re bans, restric-tions or advisories in place. Cities, towns, vil-lages or summer villages may still have fi re bans, restrictions or advisories in place. Municipalities that originally fell under the provincewide fi re ban may choose to enact their own fi re bans, restrictions or advisories.
Even though conditions have improved, it is still important for Albertans to do their part to pre-vent wildfi res. Fully ex-tinguish campfi res. Soak the ashes, stir them and then soak them again. If you’re riding an OHV, stop frequently and check for debris in such areas as the exhaust and under the seat. Debris in OHV hotspots can become superheated, fall to the ground and start a wild-fi re.
Check albertafi rebans.ca for the location of fi re
bans, restrictions and advisories as well as for
more information on what is and is not in-
cluded in the ban. Check emergency.alberta.ca for
more information on the OHV restriction.

FROMOliver Gustaf
Jan 28, 1919 - May 6, 2016
Oliver Gustaf From was born Jan 28th, 1919 near Pike’s Peak, Saskatchewan, the fi rst child of Ellen Sofi a Lindgren and Gustaf Wilhelm From. The family soon grew to include two sisters and two more brothers. Like most other families in this area “north of the Gully” and south of the North Saskatchewan River,
the farm had a few pigs, sheep for wool, cows and horses. The farming was marginal but the trapping helped out. In 1927, the settlers got together and built a school which Oliver happily attended up to grade 8. The Depression was still grinding on though and in 1939 the family moved to the Kettle River area of southern British Columbia where the farming was still marginal but the trapping and hunting was better. Oliver worked at logging and farming, but when he was discharged from the army with a hip injury at the age of 21, he built a 14 x 18 foot hunting cabin and started an outfi tting business. This only occupied him for two months of the year so he also made railway ties and bought a few cows. In the 1950’s, Oliver got his fi rst purebred Hereford and this became the beginning of a lifelong enterprise. On October 7, 1949 he married Inez Agnes Sherwood, who was teaching at the nearby one room Kraus Creek school. In 1960 Oliver and Inez bought a farm on what is now the outskirts of Calgary but Oliver soon saw greener pastures in Bentley, where they moved to in 1963. This was “God’s Country” to a cattleman like Oliver and he and Inez spent the next 50 years building a reputation with their registered Herefords. In 2006 Oliver was elected to the Alberta Hereford Hall of Fame. What he didn’t know about cows was not that important. Oliver is survived by his wife Inez, his partner in life for 67 years. A funeral service for Oliver will be held on Tuesday May 17, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Bentley Community Church, 4633 53 Avenue, Bentley, Alberta with interment to follow at Bentley Cemetery 46 Street, Bentley, Alberta. In Loving Memory of PECK (nee Damant)
Mildred Joyce Born: December 11, 1943
Passed Away: May 13, 2016On the morning of May 13, Joyce passed away peacefully. Joyce is survived by her devoted husband and farming partner of 55 years, Martin, her children; Marlene (Leonard), Ken (Michelle), Steven (Shannon), grandchildren, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, as well as extended family and an abundance of friends. Joyce and Martin were married in Lacombe on April 05, 1961. They
resided on the farm southeast of Gull Lake, where as a team they raised crops, livestock, as well as a family. The family will fondly remember Joyce every time they curl up in one of her many crocheted blankets, gaze upon her numerous cross stitch pictures, or when they gather for a holiday feast, which was generally prepared by Joyce herself. The farm will miss her input as she was an integral part of the farm right up until her passing. The family wishes to pass along a heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Lacombe Hospital, who along with Dr. Mckibbin, made a very diffi cult time considerably easier. In respect to Joyce’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of fl owers, donations can be made to Lacombe Palliative Care (409 4425 Heritage Way, Lacombe, Alberta, T4L 2P4) or the Canadian Cancer Society (6751 52 Ave, Red Deer, AB T4N 4K9) in Joyce’s name. Tax incentive changed
A tax break for Rimbey developers has been fi ne-tuned.
At its regular meeting, May 9, council agreed that only one spec home needed to be built to participate in the program.
Previously a minimum of two spec homes were required.
The tax break will allow a residential spec home to remain at bare land tax rate for the duration of one year from the time that construction is complete.
The decision was sparked by a request to council by Paul Kusch who noted

the implementation of the New Home Buyer Protection Act on Feb. 1, 2014 has weeded out the seasonal homebuilder.
He requested council amend the minimum numbers of spec homes a developer would have to construct to qualify for the agreement.
Coun. Paul Payson said the original tax relief policy made sense when it was put in place.
“That logic doesn’t exist any more,” he said.
The agreement was put in place to help attract additional residential de-velopment within the Town of Rimbey.

AltaLink is proposing to replace the existing telecommunications tower at the Alder Flats Radio Site in NE-27-45-7-W5M, located approximately one kilometre north of the intersection of Range Road 72 and Township Road 454, and four kilometres southeast of Alder Flats.
Telecommunications towers support equipment that transmits data to our system control centre. This allows us to monitor the operation of the electric system and ensure the safety and reliability of the system for our customers.
The existing tower is an 88 metre tall guyed steel structure. The new tower:
• will be approximately 108 metres tall
• will be a guyed steel lattice structure
• will have a base width of approximately one metre
• may be painted and have aircraft lighting to comply with Transport Canada’s requirements
• will support a combination of directional and omnidirectional antennas similar to the existing configuration
The existing tower will be salvaged after the replacement tower is constructed. Additionally, to accommodate the new tower, AltaLink will be expanding the fence of the Alder Flats Radio Site by three metres to the north. The fence expansion will be onto land leased by AltaLink.
