Nativism

• Favoritism towards native born Americans; nativist sentiments gave rise to anti-immigrant groups, especially those coming from eastern, and southern Europe, Asia, including all Jews

Chinese Exclusion Act 1882

• Banned entry to all Chinese with the exception of some teachers, students, merchants for 10 yrs!

• Extended several times, not repealed until 1943!

Gentlemen’s Agreement 1907

• Japan agreed to limit the number of immigrants to the U.S. if the U.S. stopped segregation against Japanese Americans

• Fear of communists!

Immigration Reform Act 1965

• Abolished quotas

• Lifted restrictions on Asians

• Stressed family reunification

• Total number of immigrants annually held at 700,000

Border Patrol Act 1996

• Strengthened border patrols and set greater penalties for smuggling immigrants and hiring illegal aliens
