Icon of the Dormition of Theotokos, by Theophan the Greek, 1392. Thepotokos (the Mother of God) is painted as lying on a bier, which has an inclination to raise the head, the part that bears the sign of holiness, the aura. She is surrounded by the Twelve Apostles and Jesus Christ is caring her soul, represented by the red seraph.
