Introduction 1

Italian Authority allows landings on runway 33, (Ciampino airport) onlyunder specified conditions as published on AIP Italia - AGA 2-39.3.5,Local flights restriction. Summarizing, if the visibility is less than 5 Km or during the night, allthe pilots must be trained to be authorized to perform all theprocedures to land RWY 33.

Civil aircraft are allowed to land RWY 33 at following conditions provided by PAPI and RTIL are Available:1- pilots not familiar with the aerodrome: HR SR-30 - SS+30 are allowed to land RWY 33 with ceiling not less than 1500 FT And ground visibility not less than 5 KM. HR SS+30 - SR-30 not allowed to land RWY.33.2- pilots who obtained aerodrome familiarization: HR SR-30 -SS+30 with the following minima ACFT CAT C 1700FT/2400 MT, CAT D 1830FT/3600MT.HR ss+30 - SR-30 are allowed to land RWY 33 with ceiling not less than 1600 FT and ground visibility not less than 3 KM

REMARK

Aerodrome familiarization can be achieved in any flight by PIC (pilot in command) under the supervision of the T.R.E. (Type Rating Examiner) or by round session with audiovisual aids approved by ENAC (Italian Civil Aviation Authority) and providedby local AOC (airlines operators Committee).

DCA (local Civil Aviation Authority) can request relevant satatement issued by company head of training or iussed by the private pilot himself.

Introduction 2

Even the new procedure “CIRCLING VOR A RWY 33” needsfamiliarization training because it ends with prescribed tracks. Inother words, the last part is a small circling.

4

Introduction 3

We present the CD indicated in AIP Italia, approved by Italian CivilAviation Authority, to give you the required training for pilots.

5

Airport Location 1

The Airport of Ciampino is placed in the south of Rome with an elevation of 380 feet.

6

Airport Location 2

The obstacles are: the volcanic mountains and some buildings close to the runway.

7

Airport Location 3

This is a general view of the airport facing east from downwind position. You can see the runway, the control tower and

Ciampino town.

8

Airport Location 4

Long final runway 33

9

Airport Location 5

Start to identify some important reference points such as: the village of Santa Maria delle Mole, and Ciampino town.

10

Airport Location 6

The most important reference point to perform visual approaches for runway 33 it’ s called “Palaghiaccio”. It is about on the runway axis, located at the end of final turn. Usually, it’s

well illuminated in the nights.

11

Airport Location 7

Do not mistake “Appia Nuova” road with the runway. It is very close to the airport, well illuminated during night, but not

parallel with runway axis.

12

Airport Location 8

Short final 33, take a look at the old runway on the right; now it’s closed, but may be, in the future, used for segregated

parallel operations.

13

Obstacles 1

The rate of climb of the terrain around Ciampino increase in direction south-east in different way, very slowly up to 1000 ft

QNH, slowly up to 2000 and quickly to 3000.

14

Obstacles 2

General view Middle Marker ILS 15, with a visibility more then 7 Km.

15

Obstacles 3

This is the most significant obstacle because it is close to theairport 3,5 Nm (4,3 DME from ROM VOR) and close to the

runway axis with an altitude of 1.390 ft.

16

Obstacles 4

Facing south east, close to control tower.

17

Obstacles 5

Now we want to give you a general idea of many others small obstacles, quite close to the runway.

18

Obstacles 6

The same obstacles looking on final 15.

19

Obstacles 7

They are responsible for the elevation of the minima ILS 15, in the example: minima category “C” 379 ft height.

20

Optical illusion 1

Watching from take off position RWY 15 it’s seem that there are no obstacles along the climb trajectory.

21

Optical illusion 2

This is an optical illusion due to the positive slope of the RWYand the terrain.

22

Optical illusion 3

23

Optical illusion 4

Approaching runway 33 pilots might feel a sensation with the rate of descend being not correct. As you can see that is due to

the profile with the terrain. It is recommended to follow the double bar glide scope (PAPI lights indications).

24

STARs 1

The standard approaches route to Ciampino starts from these airways FIXs.

25

STARs 3

Usually from those points you may expect radar vectors to final approach fixes.

26

App. procedures 1

There are several approach procedures for RWY 15.

27

App. procedures 2

All of them are simple.

28

The new procedure, called “CIRCLING VOR A RWY 33” needs special visual recognition.

App. procedures 3

29

Visual recognition 1Circling RWY33

We refer to a category “C” pattern because is the most used standard type (manoeuvring speed between 135 and 180 Kts), in order to explain what is important in the circling approach

RWY 33.

30

Visual recognition 2Circling RWY33

Performing circling 33 the mountains are very close to your pattern. That is the reason way you have to be particularly

careful in the points in the red rings.

31

Visual recognition 3Circling RWY33

The circling 33 starts from ILS 15. At the MDA(H), turn right for down wind leg and reduce the speed to maximum of 180 Kts

32

Visual recognition 4Circling RWY33

It’s very easy to recognize the stroboscopic flashing lights on threshold 33 from down wind leg position. Apply the heading

correction for crosswind component: ±1° per each Knot of cross wind.

33

Visual recognition 5Circling RWY33

Don’t forget to start the chronometer at the abeam of the end of runaway. Apply time wind correction: reduce 1’ second per 2

Knots tail wind.

34

Visual recognition 6Circling RWY33

Then focalize these two additional indications before starting base turn.

35

Visual recognition 7Circling RWY33

First: start the base turn NOT FAR then 3.5 Nm DME from “ROM” VOR (110.8).

36

Visual recognition 8Circling RWY33

Second: or not later abeam of the “Palaghiaccio”.

37

Visual recognition 9Circling RWY33

The best trajectory of the base turn describes a circle around the village of “Santa Maria delle Mole” and finishes over-fling

the building “Palaghiaccio”.

38

Visual recognition 10Circling RWY33

In case of doubt about your position do not descent before the final turn and\or before to be able to follow the indications of

PAPI.

39

Visual recognition 11Circling RWY33

40

Visual recognition 12Circling RWY33

Threshold runway 33.

41

Visual recognition 13Circling RWY33

The radar operators recommend paying attention to the missed approach procedure.

42

Visual recognition 14Circling RWY33

There is the risk to interfere with the other traffic going to land on Fiumicino RWY 34R, L or C.

43

Visual recognition 16Circling RWY33

In order to avoid this risk, there are two different missed approach procedures, depending on the direction of landing and take off on

Fiumicino airport. Pay attention to the name of the procedure.

In the example: “ILS 15 V”, the missed approach goes toward North.

44

Visual recognition 15Circling VOR A RWY33

It is forbidden to leave the procedure before the diverging

point at 4 DME from ROM/VOR.

45

Circling VOR “A” RWY 33 - 1

From the diverging point, 4 DME, you have to follow the prescribed tracks.

46

VOR “A” (circling) RWY 33 - 2

You must follow the prescribed tracks.

47

VOR “A” (circling) RWY 33 - 3

48

VOR “A” (circling) RWY 33 - 4

Here we are again on MAP position, if you look on right side, you will see the 1390 feet obstacle, exactly at your abeam but

well faraway.

49

VOR “A” (circling) RWY 33 - 6

Summarizing in every circumstances:1. - Don’t Extend down wind leg.2. - Don’t fly east of field or east of runway extention.

50

Ground movement

There is only one runway and one taxiway in Ciampino. The preferential one is Runway 15 due to ILS.

Runway 33 may be used when the wind comes from north with more than 10 Kts. or, on pilots request, in order to increase the Maximum Take off Weight, (no obstacles Northway, ANP runway). Many airlines suggest this runway to save taxi time and flight time.

When you decide to choose a runway opposite to the duty one, you must inform Ciampino Ground on frequency 121.750, before request the start up clearance.

51

Meteorological information 1

The coldest month is January with an average temperature between 2.5° ad 11.8° (degrees Celsius).

52

Meteorological information 2

Warmest month is July.

53

Meteorological information 3

The maximum of rains are concentrated within November, December and January.

54

Meteorological information 4

But you may expect heavy thunderstorms at the end of summer, between 15 August and 20 September.

55

Meteorological information 5

Last time that the airport was closed due to heavy snow.

56

Meteorological information 6

In that occasion the temperature reached – 11°

57

Meteorological information 7

The fundamental winds came from South – Southwest.

58

Meteorological information 8

59

Meteorological information 9

When the wind comes from North the weather is Cavok and usually, there are no clouds. In this case, the duty runway

will be 33.

60

Meteorological information 10

The low level wind shear has been reported only under those two conditions: Wind comes from the volcanic mountains,

with intensity more then 20 Kts.

61

Meteorological information 11

Or during heavy thunderstorms.

62

Meteorological information 12

On Ciampino airport the fog is quite inconsistent. According to the statistic data of last 20 years, the visibility drops below

800 m. only for 28 hours per year. However, when the fog appears, the visibility remains below

800 Mt. only few hours.

63

Meteorological information 13

In case of fog over Ciampino, be careful, because the nearest alternate: Fiumicino usually is closed, due to the sea

effect, and anyhow the visibility is always lower than on Ciampino.

64

Meteo Morning mirror effect - 1

This unusual phenomena can appears in some mornings when we have haze or mist and a visibility less then “6 Km.”.

65

Meteo Morning mirror effect - 2

Now the visibility is between 4 and 5 Km. Due to the particular beams of sun and the position of the landing plane, the visibility decreases during the ILS approach. This is called “Morning mirror effect”.

66

Meteo Morning mirror effect - 3

In the morning the sun, the RWY and the eyes of the pilots are on the same axis. If there is some mist or haze lied close to the ground, we will have all the conditions to get the mirror effect. You may lose the RWY at the minima of 380 ft height.

67

Meteo Morning mirror effect - 4

Below the minima the visibility will start to increase again up to the reported 4 or 5 Kms. Anyway should be visible the leading edge stroboscopic flashing lights.

68

Meteo Morning mirror effect - 5

Expect this phenomena under these conditions.

69

Alternate airports - 1

The nearest alternate is Fiumicino airport, it’s only 25 NM far from Ciampino.
