India Rooftop Market Summary
• Market Growth
- 678 MW of rooftop solar capacity added in FY 2016-17, a growth of 81% Y-o-Y.
- Yearly capacity addition is expected to scale up to over 2 GW by 2019 and over 3 GW by 2020.
- Rooftop Solar Market finally beginning to realize its potential
• Segments
- At 65% of the total installed capacity, C&I remains the biggest market segment as economic viability
(savings of up to 50%) is most pronounced for such customers
- Increased use of all available spaces (car park/ land) as well as sourcing of power through ‘open access’
is a key emerging trend as C & I customers look to maximize their savings
- Public sector segment is also expected to show robust growth in the coming years because of a
strong government push combined with 25-30% capital subsidy
- In contrast, the residential segment is expected to grow relatively slowly because of poor economic
viability and lack of financing solutions.
• Business Model
- OPEX model has been gaining market share, doubling from 12% in FY 2014-15 to 24% last year.
- Pure economics driven market giving rise to new players focussed on financial innovation
 Key challenges withholding growth:
- Procedural delays owing to lack of clarity on interconnectivity on the part of DISCOMS.
- DISCOMS being afraid to lose valuable C&I customers.
- Worries around the credit profile of certain consumers when it comes to financing.
