PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
T he last time we met was three weeks ago and last week we had a surprised holiday. Since the last meeting we had many hap-py activities.
- Just to recap, before our last meeting on 21st Aug we had a useful and informative District Membership Seminar which was declared as a Club activity. Seven members attended. - On that evening we had a Rotary Year first Club Assembly where as many as 30 members and families attended. It was a happy occasion and we had great fellowship. Thanks to PP Dato Dr Hoo Teong and Ann Esther they showed us the importance of first aid in an emergency. - Last month too we were honoured by the St John Ambulance with a “Partners-in-Service” Award in recognition of our contribution to our community. - On our 21st August meeting we too honoured PP Leong Choy Ying by awarding her an Honor-ary Membership. It was personally an emotional moment for me. It was however a missed oppor-tunity for some Rotarians who were not there to witness a historical moment especially those whom she had helped before. - Our own PDG Dr Paul Lee was himself hon-oured by the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang as an Honorary Member in a glittering ceremony the next week on the 26th August. We congratulate him and wish to say that we are proud and happy on his achievement as he truly deserves it. - One sad news in August was the surprised and sudden demise of our dear friend PDG Dato Dr Raveendra Kumar. It was only a few days before that we were having a lovely dinner together at the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang Installation. We are going to miss him. Our deepest condolences to his family. - Tomorrow, Tuesday 12th Sept we will be hav-ing a Fireside at the Hee Loy Thon Restaurant, PJ. It is a declared Club activity. PDG Dr Paul Lee will be the speaker on the topic “Club Service and TRF District Global Grant.” Members, please take note and support this important event. Thank you. - Another event that needs support is the 100%ers’ Appreciation Dinner. This will take place on the Fri 29th Sept at the Golden Dragon City Restau-rant , Paramount Garden, PJ. According to IPP Sandy Sohy most Club members are 100% ers as they took part in the 50th Anniversay Celebration. Best Wishes
I have purposely repeated the Presidential Citation pages 18-20 in this eBulletin in the hope that the Board members, espe-cially the President, will make references
to them. We didn’t qualify last year; so I hope he’ll make sure we’d qualify this year. Other-wise, all that effort to be recognised as a 5-star club will come to waste. The Presidential Citation was crafted by RI;
and PRIP K.R. Ravindran implemented it in
his year 2015-16. It was very data-driven with
benchmarks to assist clubs to strive for the
minimum qualifying levels. Since most of us
were in government or private sector organisa-
tions, data would obviously be quite familiar
with us. Our Income Tax returns would be a
good guide and example why data is in our
everyday life. But not knowing about it or not
caring to use it to advantage would really be a
shame.
Really it’s not something new to be worried
about unless, of course, one prefers the laissez
faire style of management or leadership. How-
ever, in the internet age where data prolifer-
ates, any organisation will soon be over-
whelmed and lose track of its direction and
wander aimlessly come what may. I think this
has been the case in the past where clubs simp-
ly basked in the glory of some publicity on a
president-to-president basis.
No more. With the Presidential Citation
scheme, RI gives us very clear directions to
follow and goals to achieve. With My.Rotary
as the vehicle and resource for every club to
use, record and document their work and activ-
ities, they now know exactly what to do and
how to do it. Sharing of information becomes
easier, members are better informed and areas
of concern properly addressed if clubs under-
take some strategic planning to help them nav-
igate into the future.

HONORARY ROTARIAN
PP LEONG CHOY YING
PP Choo Jee Sam, read the citation for PP Leong Choy Ying who is to be our third Honorary member in the current register. This highest award as a Honorary Rotarian of Rota-ry Clubs is bestowed upon you on this day, for your continuous dedicated contributions to The Rotary Club of Pudu, es-pecially in the area of fund raising by facilitat-ing the availability of charity movies over many years, enabling the club to raise suffi-cient funds for the many community projects. PP Leong Choy Ying was President of Pudu Rotary Club in 2010/2011. Choy Ying was born in Selangor and had her early education at the St Mary's and Convent Bukit Nanas, KL. She continued her tertiary education at the University of West of Eng-land, Bristol, UK and received a BA (Hons) in Business Studies. She then worked in London and obtained her Fellow of Institute of Char-tered Accountant in England & Wales. She is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Ac-countants as well as a member of the Malaysi-an Institute of Tax. Choy Ying is CFO of PPB Group of Perlis Plantations. She is very dedicated and honest in her work, she has earned much respect from all those who have contacts with her. Her friendliness and humble disposition com-pounded her likeable traits. Choy Ying is married to Edward, also a pro-fessional in his own right. They have three lovely children, twins Sean and Melissa (age 20) and Scott (age 19), certainly a well knit-ted and happy family. She was introduced to Rotary by the late Dato PY Choong in 2003 and since then she has held many responsible positions in the Club
including International Svc Director, TRF Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President Elect. Her calling to carry out community service sprang from pictures she saw during the North Korean severe famine in 1997. During her more than a decade of devot-ed Rotary Service, she exemplified integrity, dedication, and single mindedness. During her illustrious career with the Rotary Club of Pu-du, she has initiated and carried out numerous community projects including raising funds for a lorry to be donated to the Orang Asli com-munity to facilitate transportation of their pro-duce from the village; and many fund raising efforts for scholarships for poor students. PP Leong Choy Ying has reflected a stoic and courageous side of her character, most admi-rably so, especially during her recent severe bout of health difficulties. Fellow Rotarians, Ladies and Gentlemen; I give you Honorary Rotarian PP Leong Choy Ying.

RI NEWS—PRESIDENTIOAL CITATION (cont’d)
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PRESIDENTIAL CITATION It was PRIP Ravindran (RY 2015-16) who intro-duced a very data-driven assessment of clubs to encourage them to meet the Rotary goals of the new era. This was followed by subsequent Presi-dents with minor changes to the Citation’s crite-ria. In RY 2015-16, our DG Sti Subaidah used the Citation’s requirements as a means to catego-rise clubs in the District in a star system—5 star means the clubs fully qualified for the Presiden-
tial Citation. They are obviously vibrant and very active clubs. Pudu qualified among the 33% that did.
