NEWS & INFORMATION
Peace
Through
Service
Have you ever tried to make a work out of the letters of RYLA? I have been able to
identify one word which is a very unique word and meaning.
As unique as the word is, so it is with the 20 students who came to Camp Aldrich near
Great Bend. The camp is rustic, with well built facilities in a wilderness area..
What is RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is an intensive training program of
youth. The program enables young people to debate issues of professional responsibility
and skills, and meet Rotarians while having fun and making friends. At RYLA camp
students will have the opportunity to learn more about themselves through the voices
and eyes of people who have experienced life, people who can help them see things from
a different viewpoint. Participants will learn not only from special speakers, volunteer
Rotarians and non-Rotarians, but by interacting with other scholarship winners from
across Kansas.
RYLA was the project of PDG Odetta Marietta during her tenure in 1999-2000.
Monte Strecker is our district RYLA leader. The camp was coordinated by Krystal
Barnes of Barton Community College and assisted by Janet Siebering. Dr. Katherine
Strecker instructed in Intelligences, Judge Tom Web gave his life’s story and Father
Mike talked about choices. A major activity is the ABLE Course. This is a team and
confidence building exercise.
There was an abundances of pizza, food, snacks, karaoke, swimming and endearing
friendship that were built. A Sunday Church service was held prior to a final meal and
presentation of certificates. Each of these students will receive one hour of college credit
at Barton County Community College.
As the District Governor I was proud of our students and their sponsoring clubs.
Your club invested in the future of 20 young students. The rewards will be seen in
their young lives. Thank you Rotarians for investing in our
youth.

ROTARY DISTRICT 5670 NEWS & INFORMATION
Membership and Foundation Banquet, August 11, 2012
On August 11th the district conducted a Membership and Foundation
update and seminar.
Thirty-five people met at Celebration Centre in Lyons, Kansas for
the seminar. We were privileged to have two outstanding speakers
from Zone 27.
Stuart Palmer (Jackson Hole, Wyoming ) spoke and explained the
new program called Ignite. Ignite is a tool that used will bring mem-
bership growth from the smallest to largest clubs. Ignite has multi-
ple workable methods that can be used. Clubs using the program
need to center their effort on one, not numerous plans.
Andy Smallwood (Houston, Texas area) PDG, Rotary International
Director was our speaker for the Foundation and Membership.
Andy gave us many insights into Rotary, the Foundation and the
workings of the director.
There are 17 world directors in Rotary. Every director is responsi-
ble for two zones. He is the one who directs the Zone Institutes,
finances committee, other committees and meets four times a year
for the RI Board meeting.
Our district is responsible to him for our redistricting. The plans
were submitted to RID Andy and the RI Redistricting Committee
for consideration. Their action and his recommendation will be
given to the board for their action.
During the meeting 4 multi-Paul Harris pins were presented by
Andy Smallwood to Sheldon Hamilton, ADG Randy Krug-2, PDG
Keith Hooper-4 and ADG Alan Kreutzer-6.
Four additional Paul Harris Fellows were presented in the Norton
Club, 2 in Abilene and 4 with the Atwood Club.
Following the meeting, the 5670 Restructure Committee and DG
and DGE from D 5690 met with Smallwood to discuss and review
what directions the districts must accomplish to make this merger.
I wish to thank the Lyons Club led by Gary Sechrist who made this
event happen.

GOALS
WE
ARE A
STRONG
INTACT
DISTRICT
30 cents/day given to Rotary makes you a sustaining member that helps untold
numbers of people. If every Rotarian will give at least $100/year, we will all
be sustaining members of the Foundation. The district will receive what is
paid into Rotary in three years. This is where we are funded for grants given
by our clubs.
5% increase of members.
Every club give, support or assist your local community blood donations.
One pint saves three people ♥♥♥

REFS Call is a takeoff of the lock shop that I owned and operated for
seven years. This was a hobby that took a lot of time and money.
Locksmithing is simply not what is projected as in the movies.
A key is an instrument that allows the turning or opening of a lock. As
with all our lives, there are numerous keys to our existence — some the
most simple and some very complicated. A key is that which is seen, the
actual lock with its pins, wafers or wheels, have a certain combination
that allows the key to open a lock.
Each and every club, district and country have combinations that work
like no other. The diversity of the clubs in our district is unique to
D5670. I have an appreciation for our clubs and their communities.
Although I have visited many of the clubs, I am amazed at the diversity
of the communities and the clubs.
As one key does not work in all clubs, so it is that there is not just one
way for all clubs to function. It has been said that if all do the same
thing and in the same way, some of us are unnecessary. Change often
is like pushing an elephant uphill or putting salt on the tail of an eagle.
A key is communication. Communication comes in various forms.
Spoken, written, visual, tactile and even our body expressions can
speak loudly. Communication is an important tool that is essential in
our workings as a district.
