1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE
1.1 Purpose
This procedure provides instructions for chemical cleaning and for laying up the rough
and fine filters.
1.2 Scope
This procedure provides instructions to use chemical cleaners made up in the CIP tank for
cleaning the fine and rough filters. These systems are also used for chemical solution
layup of the two filters.
Fine and rough filter backwash and use of the CIP tank for RO cleaning are not in the
scope of this procedure.
2.0 INFORMATION
2.1 Terms and Definitions
CIP - Clean-in-Place
EDTA - Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid
H2O2 - Hydrogen Peroxide
RO - Reverse Osmosis
SWRT - Secondary Waste Receiving Tank.
2.2 General Information
2.2.1 This procedure is written for cleaning either the rough or fine filter. Valving
associated with performing the rough filter cleaning are in “( )” and valving
associated with the fine filter cleaning are in “[ ]”, or are identified in valving
tables as either rough filter or fine filter valving.
2.2.2 Observe MSDS/SDS PPE requirements for the cleaning chemicals.
2.2.3 Chemical spills are to be reported immediately to the CRO.

3.0 PRECAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS
3.1 Personnel Safety
WARNING - Chemicals used for filter cleaning can burn the eyes and skin, and may
cause respiratory tract irritation.
3.1.1 Upon completion of any portion of this procedure which requires PPE,
personnel must inspect their PPE for caustic residue or other contaminates. If
caustic residue or other contaminates are found or suspected, dispose of the
PPE compliant with ETF waste management processes in accordance with
ETF-65D-003, Package Waste.
3.2 Radiation and Contamination Control
3.2.1 Work in radiological areas will be performed using a radiological work
permit following review by Radiological Control per ALARA Work Planning
procedure, TFC-ESHQ-RP_RWP-C-03.
3.3 Environmental Compliance
3.3.1 In the event of a spill/leak/release, notify the SOM/FWS and respond per
ETF-ERP-85B-003, Emergency Spill or Release at ETF.
3.3.2 When disconnecting, breaching or opening systems or system components
that currently contain or previously contained radioactive material, the
following actions apply:
HPT coverage is required
Pre-job and post-job HPT surveys are required
Contamination controls shall be implemented in accordance with
ETF-02-001, until radiological verifications have been performed.

5.0 PROCEDURE
Special Instruction
Draining of the CIP filters may be performed at any time per Section 5.10.
NOTE - Each cleaning evolution consists of:
Charging filter and transfer lines (Section 5.4)
Adding and recirculating cleaning chemical(s) or layup chemical (Section 5.5),
and one or both of the following:
Draining cleaning chemical(s) from (rough) [fine] filter and transfer lines
and CIP equipment (Sections 5.6, 5.7, and 5.8)
Draining layup chemical from transfer lines and CIP equipment, but not
from (rough) [fine] filter (Section 5.9).
- Some cleaning events require more than one cleaning evolution. A different chemical
may be needed or the cleaning evolution may be repeated with the same chemical, as
prescribed by Process Memo.
- Sodium EDTA may be used as either a cleaning chemical or a layup chemical.
- To avoid excessive foaming in Sump Tank 2, the RO/filter cleaning switch is toggled
to maintain sump tank level between 40 and 50%.
- Due to the infrequent use of rough filter, its operation includes a separate step for
activating a “Rough Filter Normal Operation” permissive switch on graphic Rough,
before valve positions can be changed.
- SOM determines component lineup requirements.
5.1 Valve Lineup Determination
5.1.1 (SOM) DETERMINE which valve lineup Checklists/Data sheets need to be
performed.
5.1.2 (SOM) IF valves are known to be in the required position and do not require
verification, INITIAL/DATE AND DOCUMENT reason in the comments
section of the Checklist/Data Sheet.
5.1.3 (SOM) IF valves are not in the required position because of an existing
process (i.e., LOTO, Caution Tag, Work Package, Administrative Lock,
Facility Tag or Status Seals), MARK N/A on the Checklist/Data Sheet AND
INITIAL/DATE AND DOCUMENT reason in the comments section of the
Checklist/Data Sheet
