Basic Questions

What worked well last Sprint that we should continue doing?

What didn’t work well last Sprint that we should stop doing?

What should we start doing?

Retrospective Guidelines

After every sprint Whole team participation Time-boxed Formatted and Facilitated

ScrumMaster as Facilitator

“Your team is only as strong as its quietest member”

Retrospective Goal

Commit to a set of achievable action items in the next

sprint that will improve the way we

workErin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

Retrospective Flow

Gather Data (Sprint)

Silent Brainstorming (w/ post its) Time boxed (15-30min) 3-4 categories

Start, Stop, Continue, Shouts Strong, Weak, Improving

http://www.selfishprogramming.com/2009/12/08/agile-winter-school/

Erin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

Gather Data (Release) Timeline-ing Time boxed Silent Brainstorming Draw out a release timeline (with sprints) Gives the team members 3 colors to make

observations on Positive Negative Neutral

Draw the “happiness curve”

Discuss and Refine

Time boxed Walk through each comment in the

Data Gathering exercise Find common themes and categories Brainstorm actionable items for each categories

http://fabiopereira.me/blog/tag/thoughtworks/Erin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

Confirm Action Items

Time boxed Voting Give everyone 5-10 dot stickers Ask them to spend their dots on their

favorite actionable items

http://www.innovationtools.com/Articles/ArticleDetails.asp?a=141

Erin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

Close

Review most popular action items from voting

Confirm team commitment on action items You may decide to only take the top 2-5

depending on your team size Remember to carry them over to

Sprint Planning as Inputs

Erin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

Retro the Retro (yes, I’m serious) Time boxed (fast) 0-4 scale

0 = The time spent in this retro was a loss of my time and I gained nothing (negative)

2 = I gained what I spent in time (neutral) 4 = The time I spent was more than worth what I

got in return (awesome) If anything comes back 2 or lower, invite

that person to comment. ScrumMaster should take the feedback and

try to refine the approach for next sprintErin S Beierwaltes4/12/2011

How is your Retrospective going? Do you have action items? Is everyone engaged and giving

ideas? How often does the team follow

through on the action items?
