Thus, the usual number of speeds isdoubled, giving one reduction speed lowerthan each corresponding F-ord speed.
'fhis total of six changes of gear provides
for all the emergencies of driving gener-ally encountered. It overcomes the difificul-t ies of driving in heavy trafl ic; it furnishesthe necessary additional power for hil lcl imbing, hauling big loads and heavy goingthrough bad roads; it improves the brakingefficiency and incleases the road speed.
The Ford, Ruclistell-ecluipped, is pt-o-vided with the uniquc feature of TWONOISELESS HIGFI SPtrEDS in the samecar or truclt-Rrlcle stell In'termed'inte Higltbeing as noiseless and smooth lunning asthe usual FORD HIGH.
TRAFFIC DRIVING
The dliver of a Ruckstell-equipped Fordcan take advantage of added flexibility intraffic driving by placing the shift lever inthe Ruckstell position (See figure No. 2,page 7) and operating the car in Ruckstellspeeds only.
Tiris provides the most desired advan-tages in traffrc transportation: r'apid get-arvay, quick and sure braking and a drivingrange of 2 to 20 miles per hour without thenecessity of using clutch or shift lever.
HILL CLIMBING
About 90 per cent. of all hills encoun-tered can easily be climbed in RwckstellInternred,iate Higlt, (or third). Driving inthis spccd in place of the usual FORDLOW effects a substantial saving in tirne,gas, oil and wear on the motor. Also, sincethe necessity of holding down the f ootpedal is eliminated whitre driving in tl-risspeed (third), the wear on the low speedband is minimized.
DRIVING ON DIFFICULT II.OADS
The same advantages ale gained in driv-ing over rough or muddy roads or throughheavy snow. The 55 per cent. increase inpower afforded by the use of RuckstellIntermediate IJiglt,, proves sufficient forrnost dift icult going without the necessity ofhaving to drop into the usual FORD LOW-

INCREASE OF BRAKINGEFFICIENCY
Use ol Engine Compression. Fully60 per cent. of the down grades encounteredcan be travelled in Ruckstell Intermed.iateHigh without having to use the Ford footbrake. Just as driving in Ruckstell reduc-tion speeds adds 55 per cent. more power tothe engine, so does it add 55 per cent. moreresistance in the retarding of speed on downgrades.
Use of Foot Brahe. With the Ford footbrake located in the transmission, the re-tarding power of the brake band is increased55 per cent. by the use of Rwckstell Inter-uced,iate High. Thus, when it becomes nec-essary to use the foot brake on unusuallysteep down grades, the braking efficiency isimproved 55 per cent. In other words, lessthan half as much pressure is required onthe foot brake when down grades aredriven in Ruckstell Intermediate Higlt.Therefore, eliminating the use of foot pedalon over half of the down grades encoun-tered and increasing the efficiency of thebraking mechanism 55 per cent. on verysteep grades, accounts for a POSITIVESAVING IN WEAR on brake band andbrake linings.
HIGHER ROAD SPEED
The changes of speeds offered by theRuckstell Axle have been found, by thor-ough investigation, to be those most univer-sally required.
For the car owner desiring more roadspeed, howevet, a higher ratio gearing-a3 to 1 gear-has been designed, which,though still providing direct drive on Fordhigh, increases the car speed by 20 per cent.,and at the same time provides a lower gearthan the usual FORD LOW speed.
"lhe truck owner to whom speed is essen-tial but who requires, at the same time,greater pulling power than the high-speedtruck affords, secures this desired combina-tion in the Ruckstell-equipped Ford truckwith high-speed worm.
R U C K S T E L L 3 T o I G E A R S(Passenger Models)
When Ruckstell 3 to 1 gears are installed,the standard 1l-tooth pinion and 40-toothring gear are replaced with the Ruckstelll3-tooth pinion and 40-tooth ring gear.
'Ihis makes possible a speed of 38 to 40miles per hour without motor vibration,while, at the same time, sufficient powerand flexibility for hill climbing, for muddyroads and for traffic driving, is still avail-able through the use of. Ruckstell Interme-diate High.
Such a combination is ideal for driverstraveling paved roads and level country, andfor tourists and traveling salesmen forwhom a saving in time is an importantfactor.
USE OF HIGH SPEED WORM(Truck Model)
As before stated, the Ford truck Ruck-stell-equipped, provides two-purpose per-
formance-a combination of SPEED andPOWER available in one trtck.
In the Ford truck equipped with high-speed worm and Ruckstell Axle, speed isavailable without sacrificing power. Aswill be noted from the chart on page 10,Ruckstell Emergency Lout on the high-speedtruck, is more powerful than the usualFORD LOW on the low-speed truck.
From this, it wil l also be noted that thetruck driver who requires unusual powerrather than speed, secures, in the Ruckstell-equipped low-speed truck, gearings'suitablefor practically all of his demands.

OPERATBS
^HANGING from Ford\-r speeds to Ruckstel lspeeds is accomplished in-stantly by merely slippingthe clutch pedal and mov-ing the shifting lever back,with a quick snap-thequicker the better. THE MECHANICS OF THERUCKSTELL AXLE
The Ford transmission and the RuckstellAxle are constructed on precisely the sameprinciple with one slight mechanical differ-ence.
When the car or truck is driven in Fordlow, the Ford brake band operated by thefoot pedal, holds the Ford center gear at-tached to the drum, allowing the planetarygears to rotate around it.
When the car or truck is driven in Ruck-stell speeds, the Ruckstell center gear islocked by a sliding spline sleeve, allowingthe three Ruckstell planetary reductiongears to rotate around the Ruckstell centergear in exactly the same manner that theFord planetary gears revolve around theFord center gear.
This sliding spline sleeve is in constantmesh with the Ruckstell center gear, as arethe three Ruckstell planetary gears whichare the ONLY MOVING PARTS in the
Ruckstell Axle. With the Ruckstell lever
in the forward position and the car or truck
driven in Ford speeds, these three reductiongears are locked and not in motion.
The Ruckstell Axle gearing is placed in
the rear axle in such a position as to secure
the greatest possible increase of power-
that is, between the main bevel gear, or
worm gear, and the differential (or, between
the bevel gear, or worm gear' and the rear

,vheels). Situated tl-rus, the Ruckstell gear-ing brings about a reduction in wheel speedwithout a reduction in engine speed. Thisreduction takes place after the power l,tasbeen transmitted from the engine throughthe beael gear or laorm, gear, thus elimin-ating any possibil i ty of loss of powerthrough friction.
The Ruckstell Axle gearing gives thena reduction of axle speed for every Fordspeed. If you are in Ford high and theshift lever is pulled back, the reductiongears at once commence to operate. Thespeed of the motor remains constant, butthe axle speed-and in consequence, thewheel speed-is reduced, thereby givingmore power.
The same applies in Ford low, or in Fordreverse. Each time the lever is pulled back,a reduction of wheel speed takes place.Each time it is pushed forward, the Ruck-stell gears cease to operate, and the carruns as in Standard Ford Speed.
The Ruckstell ^A.xle when in operation isnoiseless. There is no danger of clashinggears when changing, as the gears are alwaysin mesh. Each part of the Ruckstell Axle isbuilt with the greatest possible precision-The life of the axle is such that if desired,it can be tal<en from an old car and installeclin a new. The road clearance rernains un-changed and the added axle weight is but afew oounds.
