WORKSHEET

You will be recording information on this worksheet

Make sure your name is on your paper

Today’s focus: 6.L.2.3 Biomes

AGENDAToday we will be learning about

ecosystems and biomes along with the various terms scientists use to describe the different levels

WRITE IN NOTEBOOK: Ecology: study of how organisms

interact with their environment and one another

Ecologists: study animals and their environments at different levels Ecologist Jane Goodall: Studied

chimpanzees in Africa for over 50 years

WRITE IN NOTEBOOK: Ecosystems = all the organisms

living in the same area AND their nonliving environment.

WRITE IN NOTEBOOKAbiotic Factors = all nonliving factorsTemperature Amount of sunlightWater (fresh or salty) Climate (rain,

weather)Soil (rocky, sandy, fertile)

WRITE IN NOTEBOOKBiotic Factors: all living factorsPlants (producers)Animals (consumers)

BRAIN POP VIDEO – ECOSYTEMS

You will be watching the video to answer the following questions:

1. How are ecosystems categorized? 2. What is a population? 3. What is a habitat?

Now let’s review our answers….

DID YOU KNOW? Scientists group living things based on similar

characteristics Scientists use an Ecosystem Pyramid to show

these relationships

TURN YOUR HANDOUT OVER

We will work to complete An Ecosystem Organization Pyramid

WRITE ON HANDOUT Individual organism: 1 specific type of

organism

DRAW ON HANDOUT Individual organism: pick 1 specific type

of organism and draw it in the top triangle

WRITE ON WORKSHEET Population: groups of the same organism

living in the same area; able to produce offspring

DRAW ON WORKSHEET Population: think of the organism you drew

in the top triangle and draw 4 of those same organisms now

WRITE ON HANDOUT

Community: Many differentpopulations interacting with each other

DRAW ON HANDOUT

Community: think of differentPopulations that can live togetherDraw them now!

WRITE ON HANDOUTEcosystem: the community of living organisms along with their nonliving environments

WRITE ON HANDOUTEcosystem: think of all the nonliving things within the community you drew before

Draw that now

WRITE ON HANDOUTBiomes: areas of similar climates

with similar plants and animalsfound in specific regions around

the Earth

ADD THESE BIOME NAMES NOW TO HANDOUT

WRITE ON HANDOUTBiosphere: Is EVERYTHING…

DRAW ON HANDOUTBiosphere: Is EVERYTHING… draw Earth

BRAINPOP: LAND BIOMES http://www.brainpop.com/

We are watching and listening to the video to answer the following questions on your worksheet

BRAINPOP: LAND BIOMES http://www.brainpop.com/

1. What is a biome?2. What factors determine

the plants and animals found in biomes?

3. List the 6 main biomes found on Earth?

HOW DID WE DO?

1. What is a biome?2. What factors determine

the plants and animals found in biomes?

3. List the 6 main biomes found on Earth?

DID YOU GET THESE? Rainforest Grassland Temperate Forest Desert Tiaga Tundra

DIFFERENT BIOMES… Biomes have unique plants and

animals They also have unique climates

(rainfall, temperatures, amounts and intensity of sunlight)

For instance: A tropical rainforest has lots of rain, is humid and hot. Plants grow thick and deep in the rainforest; animals have adapted to this unique environment in order to survive

LIMITING FACTORS:

Factors that limit the population sizes of plants and animals found in a particular ecosystem.

Factors can include: Amount of sunlight Temperature Amount of organic matter in soil Availability of water Number of Predators Number of competors Availability of shelter / space

TIME TO GERMINATE SEEDS!!!

TIME TO GERMINATE SEEDS!!!

We will take time to discuss our next unit…

We will be germinating seeds over the weekend to use next week in class

We will be investigating seeds and tropism next week

Today we will be working with bean seeds!

ACTIVITY Now close your eyes… Imagine you are in a rainforest

Sounds of the rainforest.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg3W11G4In0

CLOSE YOUR EYES!

Imagine an animal you could find in the rainforest — now think of something you know about this animals.Think about your animal alone as an

individual species. What does it look like? How does it move? How does it obtain food?

CLOSE YOUR EYES! Now imagine this animal interacting

with others of its kind. Does your animal live alone or in

a group? How does it take care of its

young? How does it interact with other

adults?

CLOSE YOUR EYES! Next think of other types of living

things your animal might interact with. What does it eat? What eats it? Does it depend on grasses or

trees for shelter or making a nest? Does it compete with other types

of animals for food?

CLOSE YOUR EYES!

Next think of the non-living things that your animal interacts with. Where does it make its home? Where does it find water? What type of soil does it live

on? What is the weather like where

it lives?

CLOSE YOUR EYES! Finally, think about your organism in

relationship to the whole planet Earth. Imagine a picture of the Earth from

space. Where on the planet does your animal

live? How does its life affect the lives around

it? Does its life affect you?

NOW OPEN YOUR EYES…. In this activity, we ZOOMED out

from 1 INDIVIDUAL species to the WHOLE planet known as the biosphere.

IN YOUR NOTEBOOK… Write down all the things you need to make the BEST

ice cream sundae EVER!

Add at least ten things. Be detailed!

Best ice cream sundae creator gets CANDY!

WORKSHEET Read “Biomes and Ecosystems” in pairs. You have 6 minutes.

WORKSHEET Read “Earth’s Biomes” silently and answer

the questions You have 10 minutes.

THINK-PAIR-SHARE

Think of the MOST important THREE things you learned

Now share with your neighbor.

Now talk as a class.
