The S7-300 is the most often soldSIMATIC controller which makes success-
ful automation solutions possible. TheS7-300 for system solutions with itsmain emphasis in production engineer-ing provides a universal automation plat-form which means an optimum solutionfor your applications in centralized anddistributed installations. Permanent in-novation makes this automation plat-form continuously more valuable.
Application
The SIMATIC S7-300 offers solutions forthe most diverse automation tasks inthe following areas:
Production engineering
Automobile industry
General machine construction
Specialized machine construction
Machine construction in series (allkinds of production machines), OEM
Processing of plastics
Packaging industry
Food and tobacco industry
Process engineering (e.g. water sup-ply, building engineering)
Special applications
For special applications there are addi-tional product designs available basedon S7-300:
Failsafe applications with a new fail-safe S7-300F as well as correspondingI/O are now possible.
For applications requiring powerfultechnological and motion controlfunctions, a special technology CPUcan be used.
At the same time, SIMATIC C7 com-plete units are available based onS7-300 CPUs with integrated HMI forconfiguring machine controls where
space is very restricted. This spectrum is rounded off by a CPUin ET 200S configuring form withwhich distributed, intelligent prepro-cessing is possible.
Introduction
Production line in the automobile industry automated with the S7-300
Low operating costs
The Micro Memory Card (MMC) can actas data and program memory so that nobackup battery is required and mainte-nance costs can partly be saved. TheMMC can also accommodate a completeproject, including symbols and com-ments, which makes servicing easiersince no project data are required on the
respective device. The MMC also facilitates program up-dating. It permits read and write accessduring RUN so that, for instance, ar-chiving of measured values or process-ing of recipes becomes easy.
Low engineering costs
The S7-300 is characterized by efficientconfiguring and programming whichresults in low engineering costs. Thehuge quantity frameworks of the CPUsmake the S7-300 an ideal platform forthe task-oriented STEP 7 EngineeringTools complying to IEC 61131-3, for ex-ample high-level languages such as SCL.
In addition, technology-oriented runt-ime software, e.g. Easy Motion Controlcan be used for motion control tasks.
The Engineering Tools also facilitatemodular programming and re-usabilityof existing software. Engineering Toolsnot only support development but alsoreadibility, ease of maintenance anddocumentation of programs.
Additionally, powerful integrated sys-tem diagnostics increase controlleravailability and thus productivity. Con-figurable process diagnostics for analyz-ing process faults, reducing downtimes
and further enhancing productivity arealso implemented.

Design
The S7-300 enables a space-savingmodular configuration to machine con-trollers adapted to the task at hand, without taking slot rules into consider-ation. A fan is not necessary during op-eration. Apart from the modules, only aDIN rail is required where the modulesare swung into place and secured byscrews. A configuration is then possiblewhich is robust and electro-magnetical-ly compatible.
The backplane bus is integrated into themodule and is assembled by insertion inthe bus connector. The diverse S7-300 module spectrum
can be used for centralized expansionsas well as for simple configuration ofdistributed structures with ET 200M;this results in a very cost-efficientspare-parts maintenance.
Powerful, flexible networking
Interfaces that are directly integrated inthe CPUs permit the configuration of apowerful communication landscapethat employs standard bus technolo-gies, e.g. for HMI and programming de-vice functions. Sufficient connectivity isprovided for numerous HMI devices. Arouting function enables a program-
ming device to be connected at anypoint in the network and to address allnetwork nodes.
Multi-point interface - MPI
MPI is the low-cost solution for commu-nications with programming devicesand PCs, HMI systems and otherSIMATIC S7/C7/WinAC controllers. A to-tal of 125 MPI stations can be connect-ed at transmission rates of 187.5 kbit/s,e.g. for exchanging process data amongvarious controllers or for HMI functionswithout any programming overhead.
With the CPU 317 and 318-2 DP, the MPI
can also be used as PROFIBUS DP inter-face and permits the configuration oftwo DP lines.
PROFIBUS DP
For the economical configuration oflarge distributed networks, the SIMATICS7-300 can also be connected toPROFIBUS DP (according to EN 50170).This opens up communications optionswith a variety of communications part-ners - from the SIMATIC controller tothird-party field devices.

Communications with existing SIMATICS5 or SIMATIC 505 systems can also beconfigured.
Distributed I/Os can be configured withSTEP 7 like centralized I/Os which saves alot of engineering overheads. TheS7-300 can be used both as master andslave.
The system is open since it supports theDP V1 functionality. It facilitates param-eter assignment and diagnostics forthird-party systems connected to aPROFIBUS network.
For future applications, a new CPU withintegrated Ethernet/PROFInet interfacefor Component based Automation, pro-gramming and operator control andmonitoring via Ethernet will be avail-able.

CPU 314C-2 DPand CPU 315-2 DP (right)
For setting up a programmable control-ler system, the user can choose from a
graded spectrum of CPUs, from thestarter model to the high-performanceCPU. The CPUs enable short machinecycles thanks to their high processingspeed. The narrow module width per-mits compact controller configurationsand small control cabinet dimensions.
The so-called standard CPUs have awidth of only 40 mm and are also avail-able in two fail-safe designs. Variouscompact CPUs with widths of 80 to 120mm can additionally integrate I/Os andtechnological functions.

CPU Innovation
All CPUs 317 have 512 KB of workingmemory and enable extensive use ofSTEP 7 Engineering Tools and techno-logically oriented runtime software. They also offer improved and more flex-ible networking since up to 32 activelinks with other nodes, e.g. program-ming devices and operator panels canbe built up simultaneously.
As many as three versions of high-endCPUs are available for a variety of appli-cations:
The 317-2 DP standard CPU is suitable
for the most common control taskswith a high share of communicationsfunctions. Both DP interfaces are avail-able as combined DP/MPI interfacesand can be configured either as PROFI-BUS master or PROFIBUS slave.
The fail-safe 317F-2 DP CPU offers fail-safety system expansions in compari-son to the standard CPU and thePROFIsafe profile for safe communica-tions. It complies with major specifica-tions/standards:
- IEC 61508 (SIL 3),
- EN 954 (Category 4) and
- NFPA 79, NFPA 85It has an approval from the GermanTechnical Inspectorate (TV).
Safety-relevant programs can be pro-grammed using the STEP 7 LAD andFBD languages and certified program-ming examples from the F library ofDistributed Safety.
For expansion, the fail-safe ET 200Sand ET 200M stations are available.
The technology CPU 317T-2 DP inte-grates powerful technology and mo-tion control functions in the CPU. It isdesigned for dynamic motion controlof multiple axes.
Pre-programmed, PLCopen-compli-ant motion control functions, integraldiscrete I/O, equidistance and isoch-
rone mode of PROFIBUS DP permitflexible motion control of several(even coupled) axes, for example con-trolled positioning, synchronismand/or cam switching.
STEP 7 enables convenient configura-tion and parameterization of the axes.

with integral I/O and technological func-tions have been continuously innovatedand provide high functionality and per-formance:
Faster actual-value acquisition for thecounting and frequency measure-ment functions enables greatly im-proved dynamics, e.g. for positioningtasks.
Triple processing speed for float-ing-point operations considerablyspeeds up program execution.
Copy protection of the user softwarecan be implemented by scanning theserial number of the MMC during op-eration.
An increased number of function callsand data blocks facilitates porting ofuser programs that were originally de-veloped for standard CPUs and arenow to be used as compact CPUs.

Fail-safe systems are used where thehighest safety standards for personnel,
machines and the environment must beguaranteed, i.e. accidents and damageas the result of an error must be avoidedat all costs.
An additional SIMATIC fail-safe control-ler is now available with the S7-300F es-pecially for safety-oriented and simulta-neously distributed applications in theproduction industry.
The predominant feature of theS7-300F is the combination of standardplant automation and safety engineer-ing in a single system. This means thatnot only normal communication but
also safety-oriented communication(using the PROFIsafe-Profile) withPROFIBUS DP between central controllerand I/O takes place - intrinsic normalcommunication is not required. This fu-sion of standard and safety automationconsiderably reduces the expenditurefor configuring and designing modernsafety-oriented plants.
The S7-300F achieves the safety-orient-ed functions through an F-CPU as wellas a fail-safe modules, which can beused in the S7-300 as well as in theET 200M and ET 200S distributed I/Osystems. A special library is availablefrom the German Technical Inspector-ship (TV) providing certified program-ming examples. The programmingtakes place with the standard LAD andFBD programming languages.
Fail-safe motor starters connected toET 200S are available as an ideal supple-ment to the S7-300F.

Programming with STEP 7 and Engineering Tools
The S7-300 is programmed with the ba-sic software STEP 7 or STEP 7 Lite. This
enables the performance capability ofthe S7-300 to be used in a simple,user-friendly manner. Both containfunctions for all phases of an automa-tion project - from configuring to com-missioning, testing and servicing.
STEP 7 Lite
The cost-efficient software STEP 7 Lite isavailable to achieve stand-alone appli-cations with the SIMATIC S7-300.
STEP 7 Lite is characterized by very fastentry into programming and simpleproject handling.
Additional SIMATIC software packages, such as Engineering Tools, cannot beused for simulation. Programs whichwere generated with STEP 7-Lite, canalso be processed using STEP 7.
STEP 7
STEP 7 is used for, among other things, larger or more complex applications, with which, e.g. programming withhigh-level languages or graphic conceptlanguages (see Engineering Tools)takes place or the use of function orcommunications modules is required.
STEP 7 enables the use of additional SI-
MATIC software packages, for instanceEngineering Tools.
Engineering Tools
Engineering Tools opens additional pos-sibilities to program automation solu-tions in a user-friendly, task orientedmanner. The following tools are avail-able for programming:
S7-SCL
(Structured Control Language),the high-level language based on PAS-CAL for programming SIMATIC S7/C7controllers
S7-GRAPHfor graphic configuration of sequentialcontrols for SIMATIC S7/C7
S7-HiGraph
for graphic description of sequential orasynchronous processes with stategraphs for SIMATIC S7/C7
CFC
(Continuous Function Chart), the tech-nological plan for graphic interconnec-tion of complex functions for SIMATIC S7
Distributed SafetySoftware package for generating safety-related programs in LAD and FBD, in-cluding F library with programming ex-amples
The use of Engineering Tools is advanta-geous above all for larger, more com-plex applications and correspondinglygreater CPUs.
CPUs/Engineering Tools All CPUs can be programmed in STL,LAD and FBD basic languages.
Should the S7-SCL high-level lan-guage be used, CPUs 313C, 314 andabove are recommended.
If graphic concept languages(S7-GRAPH, S7-HiGraph und CFC) areused, CPUs 314 and higher are recom-mended.

Totally Integrated Automation
Totally Integrated Automation means:With a single, completely integratedand uniform system you can solve allyour automation tasks! Every function isavailable from one vendor.
Distributed preprocessing (distributedintelligence) makes new concepts in theplant and machine construction possi-ble with every advantage such as re-us-ability of the software, faster commis-sioning times and greater availability.
Of great significance in the system arecommunication networks:
Industrial Ethernet (IEEE 802-3 and
802.3u) the international standard for area andcell networking.
PROFIBUS (IEC 61158/EN 50170) the international standard for the celland field area as well as PROFIBUS PA forintrinsic applications in process automa-tion.
AS-Interface(EN 50295) the international standard for commu-nication with sensors and actuators.
EIB(EN 50090, ANSI EIA 776) the world-wide standardized buildinginstallation system and basis for build-
ing automation.MPI Multi point interface for communication between CPUs,PG/PC and TD/OP.
Point-to-point coupling for communication between two nodeswith special protocols. Thepoint-to-point structure representsthe simplest communication form.Different special protocols are used(e.g. RK 512, 3964(R) and ASCII).
Integration in the IT world
The S7-300 enables the modern ITworld to be integrated into automation
technology. The following functions are possibleusing the insertable CP (CP 343-1 IT):
Creating your own Web pages withrandom HTML tools whereby the pro-cess variables of the S7-300 are sim-ply assigned to the HTML objects.
Monitoring the S7-300 using theseWeb pages with a standard browser.

The comprehensive range of modulesenables modular adaptation of the
S7-300 to a wide variety of applications. The following are available:
Digital and analog I/O modules for al-most all types of signals, including in-terrupt processing and diagnostics
Digital and analog Ex I/O modules foruse in hazardous areas
Function modules for counting/mea-suring, all sorts of positioning func-tions, cam control and loop control
Communication modules forpoint-to-point coupling or bus com-munication using AS-Interface,
PROFIBUS and Industrial Ethernetwith IT functionality
Load supply units which provide24 V DC operating voltage
Interface modules for connectingracks for multi-tier installation ofthe SIMATIC S7-300
Expansion options
Should the automation task requiremore than 8 modules, the central con-troller (CC) of the S7-300 can be ex-panded using expansion units (EU)(except for CPU 312 IFM, 312C and 313and 317T-2 DP). Altogether up to 32modules can be used, up to 8 per expan-sion unit.
Communication between the individualdevices is carried out independently byinterface modules (IM).
In the case of plants covering an exten-sive area, CC/EUs can be configured ingreater distances (up to 10 m).
This means that for a single-tier installa-tion, the maximum configuration is256 I/O, with up to 1024 I/O for multipleline installations. For a distributed sys-tem using PROFIBUS DP 65536 I/O con-nections can be used (up to 125 sta-tions, for example ET 200M usingIM 153).
The slots are freely addressable, i.e. noslot rules exist (except CPU 312 IFM,312C, 313, 314, 314 IFM and 317T-2DP).

Signal modules are the interface of theSIMATIC S7-300 to the process. A num-
ber of various digital and analog mod-ules make those I/Os available which arerequired for the respective task.Easy installation
Sensors and actuators are connectedusing front connectors. The connectoris simply plugged into the new modulewhen the module is replaced, the wiringremains unchanged. Coding of the frontconnector prevents confusion.
Fast connection
Using SIMATIC TOP connect makes iteven easier to connect (not for onboardI/Os of compact CPUs). You can choosebetween prewired front connectorswith individual strands and a complete-ly modular building block system, con-sisting of front connector module, cableand terminal block.
High packaging density
The large number of channels on eachmodule is the one reason for thespace-saving design of the S7-300:Modules are available with 8 to 32channels (digital) and 2 to 8 channels(analog).
Easy parameterization
Modules are configured and parameter-ized using STEP 7, there are no compli-cated switch settings. Data is storedcentrally and, when modules have beenreplaced, automatically transferred tothe new module to prevent setup er-rors. No software upgrading is neces-sary when using new modules. Configu-rations which have been carried out onecan be repeated identically any numberof times, e.g. for series machines.
Diagnostics, interrupts
Many modules monitor signal acquisi-tion (diagnostics) and signals from the
process as well (process alarm). In thisway it is possible to react quickly to anyirregularities or process events. Wheth-er the controller should react and whatthe reaction should be can be parame-terized in STEP 7.
Special modules
The simulation module can be insertedin the S7-300 for testing and simulationpurposes. It enables encoder signals tobe simulated with the switch and dis-plays output signals using LEDs. Themodule can be plugged in anywherewithout worrying about slot rules.
The dummy module reserves a slotwhich has not yet been configured. Themechanical configuration and addressallocation remain unchanged when themodule is slotted at a later date.
On the following pages you will find cri-teria for selecting the right signal mod-ule for a given application.
