Objectives Objectives Describe the importance of freehand sketching for communicating technical ideas.

Letter clear, neat, freehand notes and directions on a technical drawing or sketch.

Communicate technical ideas through freehand sketching.

Develop design ideas through multi-view or pictorial sketches.

3

Objectives Objectives •

Explain the advantages of using a CAD program to create notes and other text on a drawing.

4

LetteringLettering•

Freehand sketches and drawings need some freehand lettering to explain features of a new idea or product.

5

LetteringLettering•

Lettering is the process of printing clear, concise words on a drawing to help people understand the drawing.

A picture is worth a 1000 words but a few chosen words will greatly enhance the sketch.

Simple freehand lettering compliments a drawing.

Lettering CompositionLettering Composition•

In lettering, composition means arranging words and lines with letters of the right style and size.

8

Lettering CompositionLettering Composition•

Letters in words are not placed at equal distances from one another.

9

Lettering CompositionLettering Composition•

They are placed so that the spaces between the letters are equal.

10

Lettering CompositionLettering Composition•

The distance between words, called word spacing should be about equal to the height of the letters.

The distance between lines of letters is from 1/2 to 1-1/2 times the height of the letters.

11

LetteringLettering•

Drafters create guidelines spaced to keep their lettering uniform.

Sketchers should estimate the letter spacing and height.

Drafters need good lettering skills throughout their careers.

12

Lettering FractionsLettering FractionsFractions•

Fractions are always made with a division line that is horizontal (side to side)

The whole fraction is usually twice the height of regular numbers

The numbers in the fraction never touch the division line.

Refer to Figure 2-9.

Achieving Good LetteringAchieving Good LetteringYou do not learn how to do good lettering all at once.

You learn good lettering by practicing it little by little over a long time.

15

Types of Lettering FontsTypes of Lettering FontsThe choice of lettering type or font should be made carefully.

Fancy letteringIs not practical for notes and dimensions on technical drawings.Requires more pencil strokes. Is more costly to produce.Serves the purpose of communicating information no better than regular lettering.

Most companies are now only using uppercase lettering.

We will stress uppercase lettering in this class.

Drafters tend to have their own unique lettering styles.

Whatever style you choose, remain consistent throughout drawing.

21

Types of LetteringTypes of LetteringSingle Stroke Vertical Lettering•

Refer to Figure 2-14 in text.•

Shapes and proportions of vertical (straight) letters and numerals are shown.

Look at •

the pencil strokes needed to create each letter

the order in which the strokes should be made.

22

Inclined LetteringInclined LetteringSingle Stroke Inclined Lettering

Inclined lettering generally should slope at an angle of about 67.5 degrees from the horizontal.

The only difference between vertical and inclined lettering is the slant.

23

Display LetteringDisplay LetteringDrafter most often chooses Gothic which is considered to be the most legible lettering style.

Please take notesPlease take notes

25

Lettering AssignmentsLettering AssignmentsLettering MUST be done on drafting table !

Align and tape the vellum sheet like normal.

26

Lettering AssignmentsLettering AssignmentsLayout sheet border in light line work first.

Layout guidelines using your scale.

Place guidelines 1/8” apart all the way down the left side of the sheet.

Letter every other line to create single spaced text.

27

Lettering AssignmentsLettering AssignmentsLetter a full 3/4 of page.

Source can be book, magazine article, etc.NO Profanity or inappropriate language.

Letter margin to margin.

Use UPPERCASE LETTERS only!

Darken border after lettering is completed.

28

Lettering AssignmentsLettering AssignmentsWatch letter spacing.

Keep vertical strokes straight.

Keep horizontal strokes straight.

Create letters with pencil strokes, not handwriting motions.

29

Lettering AssignmentsLettering AssignmentsUsually takes 1 to 1.5 hours (!)

Turn on the radio.Your hand WILL HURT! Yes, I care about what your lettering looks like!

Lettering Guidelines Lettering Guidelines ““By EyeBy Eye””

32

Lettering Guidelines By EyeLettering Guidelines By EyeWhen you work on a full-size drawing, you will need to add text throughout the sheet.

It is too time-consuming and tedious to measure the 1/8” guideline spacing.

A faster method is needed.

33

Lettering Guidelines By EyeLettering Guidelines By EyeBy estimating the 1/8” spacing, with the parallel bar, you can quickly produce guidelines.

This is a very important technique that you should master.

Saves time.

Lettering AssignmentLettering Assignment3/4 page of text.

Lettering Plate #2.

Estimate the 1/8” spacing using parallel bar.

Work on speed and accuracy.
