"Living This Week's Readings" The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
The example of the Holy Family can be summed up in the words of today's sec-ond reading. They were clothed in "heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gen-tleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another…." This feast offers all families the inspiration and encouragement to make these values an essential part of each relationship, conversation and interaction with one another. Pray in a special way today for all parents, grandparents, and guardi-ans as they strive to make their families holy.

“A Child has been Born for Us, Unto Us a Son is Given”
T he Gospel’s announcement of glad tidings “A child has been born for us” still rings on the occasion of every
birth, according to Hannah Arendt. The image of the new-born gave rise to her concept of natality. It means that with every birth begins not only a story of another life but also a story of a new life, the promise of new initiatives and new beginnings. Indeed, each person is in himself a new begin-ning. Does this fundamental character of natality not ob-scured by reproductive technology, especially with genetic programming?
Of course medically assisted procreation helps solve many problems related to birth. Thanks to the efficiency and the operational techniques implemented, our contemporary world solves issues like infertility or sterility. Even the im-pact of menopause is offset sometimes. It is also possible to satisfy the desires of unconventional parenthood and prevent the transference of serious illness to the child. However, these feats also pose serious ethical challenges. In solving the problem of infertility, assisted reproduction provides access to basic cells of human life. Medical and institutional responsibility is highly involved in the genesis of a human being. This genesis requires ethical vigilance in our time when a child is sometimes considered as a "human creation" whom right to life depends on the parents, especially while he/she is still in the womb. In this context, what implications should we draw from the biblical sentence a child has been born for us, unto us a son is given?
It is not given to the parents to "create" a child in their own image. A child is a gift from God, the Lord and giver of life. As a gift, a child is given to the parents and to humankind from conception to natural death. There is no need of dis-cussing about the time the fetus becomes sufficiently human to have the right to life. As a baby on the way, the fetus is a human-living-being from conception. He is not fully devel-oped yet, but he is fully human and therefore has a right to life from this time. “The human being is to be respected and treated as a person from the moment of conception; and therefore from that same moment his rights as a person must be recognized, among which in the first place is the inviola-ble right of every innocent human being to life” (Donum Vitae I,1). This right to life involves for the parents, the duty and responsibility of welcoming the new born into the fami-ly.
Even God needed a family to integrate humankind. The Ho-ly Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph reminds us the natural reality of a family. It is a loving relationship between a man and a woman who welcome the gift from God in their midst. Every child is born into an already-existing world with its “traditions”. The family helps him/her learn about those traditions, including the fundamental values of human exist-ence.

On behalf of Fr. Joe & Fr. Lambert and every-one at St. Martha and St. Mary, we wish you a
very Happy and Blessed New Year
Dear parishioners of Saint Martha Parish and Saint Mary Parish, Forget about Waldo! Many of you have been wondering instead ‘Where’s Fr. Bill?’ I can finally provide an answer to that question as I returned to full-time ministry at Saint Michael Parish, Hudson at the beginning of Advent. I will be assisting Father Ren Tocci who was a parishioner of Saint Patrick Parish, Stoneham when he discerned his voca-tion to priesthood. I was honored to vest him with his priest-ly vestments on his ordination day. We have come full circle as he has now welcomed me warmly to Hudson. I am grateful to the parishioners of Saint Martha Parish and Saint Mary Parish for their support in prayer over the past seven months when I was dealing with a depression that began with the diagnosis of my mother’s Alzheimer’s Dis-ease twenty years ago and increased over the course of the tragic course of events that unfolded within the Archdiocese of Boston over the past twenty years. I am grateful for the therapeutic treatment I received at Saint John Vianney Cen-ter in Pennsylvania and I return to ministry in perfect health. I feel better physically, emotionally and spiritually than I have in many years! Please continue to remember me in prayer as I return to the parish ministry that I love. You are in my prayers during this Advent Season as we prepare to welcome Jesus ever more fully into our hearts at Christmas. God is so good!

Considering a Defibrillator in Church... Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) be-
coming more and more common in public places. With a parishioner recently having a heart attack at the 9:30 Mass, another member of the parish has made an initial donation toward the purchase of AEDs for both of our churches (St. Martha had one but the battery died and is no longer sold). These units will likely cost over $1,500 each.
If you would like to contribute to this lifesaving device, you can put a donation in an envelope, mark it “AED” and mail or drop it in the basket. If there isn’t enough money collected, your money can be refund-ed.

There will be no Faith Formation classes for children the week of December 30. En-joy the Christmas Season! Classes resume the week of January 6. There will be an important meeting regarding First Reconciliation for parents of second graders who attend classes at St. Martha Church, on Sunday, January 5 at 9:00am in the Parish Hall. Parents and grade 2 students should attend.
Discovering Christ is a seven– week experience where any-one and everyone, from the baptized in the pews to the un-baptized, is invited to hear the Good News and personally encounter Jesus Christ. Plan to join us each Wednesday at St. Martha starting just before Lent on February, 12th for what promises to be a Fun and Transformative experi-ence!
The family is therefore the basic cell of social life, the ideal place where the newborn starts experiencing the coexistence with others and with God. The child will learn about God, faith, prayer, and worship. That is why every Catholic family is called to be an Ecclesia Domestica, a Domestic Church.
In this Christmas time, let us pray for life, may the birth of Jesus foster a consistent respect for human life, born and unborn; and may all the pregnant ladies enjoy the blessing of a safe delivery of a healthy child, the new life God has en-trusted to them.
Happy New Year!
