SALIVARY GLANDS AND PANCREAS

Dr Iram Tassaduq

The minor salivary glands are located in the submucosa of different parts of the oral cavity.

They include the lingual, labial, buccal, molar and palatine glands.

MINOR SALIVARY GLANDS

MAJOR SALIVARY GLANDS

STRUCTURE OF GLAND

MYOEPITHELIAL CELLS Contractile cells Lie between basal

plasma membrane of epithelial cells and basal lamina of epithelium

Move secretory product

DUCT SYSTEM

INTERCALATED DUCTIt leads from acinus

STRIATED DUCT

Striations are produced due to in folding of basal plasma membranes of columnar cells forming duct

INTERLOBULAR DUCT

EXCRETORY DUCT

DUCT SYSTEM

OPENNING OF EXCRETORY DUCT

SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND

SUBLINGUAL GLAND

COMPARISION

PANCREAS

PANCREASCompound tubulo alveolar gland

Striated ducts absentIntercalated duct cells do not contain secretory granules

CAPSULE & SEPTA

EXOCRINE PANCREAS

CENTROACINAR CELLS

CENTROACINAR CELLS

DUCT SYSTEM

ZYMOGEN GRANULES

Contain variety of digestive enzymes like exo and endopeptidases, Lipases and nucleolytic enzymes

INTERCALATED DUCT

Add bicarbonate and water to the exocrine secretion

EXCRETORY DUCT

ENDOCRINE PANCREAS

ISLETS OF LANGERHANS

Islets constitute 1-2% of total volume

Polyhedral cells are arranged in short irregular cords surrounded by network of fenestrated capillaries

SCHEMATIC DRAWING

CELLS OF ISLETS Most abundant in tail A cells secrete

Glucagon B cells secrete Insulin

most numerous D cells secrete

Somatostatin
