SCOPE
This procedure covers the surfaces preparation and application of protective
coating for Rutenberg Project.
REFERENCES
Technical specification for Flue Gas Desulfurization System_Annexure “B” Spec. : BM-241-P1
GENERALS
Blast cleaning & Application of coating shall not be conducted when the temperature of
the surfaces is less than 3℃ above dew point of the surrounding air or when the relative
humidity of the air is more the 80%.
All rough welds, burrs, weld spatters, indentations, and all other sharp surface
projections shall be ground smooth prior to further surface preparation.
Steel and fabrication defects such as weld spatters, lamination scabs, sharp edges of welds,
and slivers visible before or after blast cleaning shall be repaired prior to coating.
Abrasive shall be dry and oil-free. Oil and water separators shall be used in compressed air
lines to remove oil and moisture from the air before using. Separators shall be placed as
close as possible to the blast equipment.
After blasting and immediately prior to coating, the blasting dust and abrasives shall be
removed by using a high pressure air blow off and followed by vacuum cleaning.
After fabrication and testing and before flushing out with demineralized water, the interior and
exterior surfaces of stainless steel tanks shall be thoroughly cleaned to be free of grease, oil,
weld spatter, chips or other foreign materials. Visual examination will be made to be sure that
no traces of foreign matter remain on the surfaces in contact with the fluid other system
components are eliminated. After testing, the interior surfaces shall be flushed out with
demineralized water. Cleaning shall be done to the complete satisfaction of the Purchaser.

SURFACE PREPARATION
All surface of carbon steel & Alloy steel shall be blasted, unless otherwise specified,
using dry blasting abrasive only. Blast cleaning shall be carried out in accordance with
surface preparation of para. 5.3 in this procedure.
Weld slag and residue, dust or other residue shall be removed completely before painting.
Surface preparation for field coating shall include removal of all mill scale, rust and
foreign matters by compressed air or soft brush or by water cleaning.
Oil, grease and other rust on the surface to be painted shall be cleaned with solvent or
water washed before blast cleaning in accordance with SSPC-SP1.
APPLICATION OF COATING
The following surface shall not be painted and shall be protected adequately during the
painting operation.
4.2.2.1 Unless otherwise noted, specified coating shall terminate at least 2 inches from
the prepared end. Final weld end preparation for carbon steel pipe, structural /misc. steel,
steel plate, etc. shall be coated with a weldable primer, such as weldable zinc ethyl
silicate shopprimer or owner approved equal. Weldable primers may not be used on
stainless steel or nickel base alloys.
4.2.2.2 Name and instruction plates, nonmetallic material(e.g rubber, plastic, etc.) and
nonferrous materials (e.g., copper, nickel, titanium, etc.)

Painting shall be commenced within 4 hours after surface preparation. If some sign of rust might
occur even within 4 hours, surfaces shall be prepared again in accordance with the specification.
Faying surface of bolted connection shall be masked to prevent application of all but
the Inorganic zinc primer or Inorganic zinc shopprimer.
Only inorganic zinc primer or Inorganic zinc shopprimer shall be used on all friction-
type (slip-critical) bolted connections for all structural steel. All Friction-type(slip-
critical) bolted surface shall be masked in accordance with attached Painting
Scheme of steel structure. After bolting (high tension bolted areas), this areas shall
be coated in accordance with the specified painting system.
Method of determining the final DFT(dry film thickness)shall be take reading over any
square meter of the painted area. Check the dry film thickness of coating using SSPC-PA2.
The contractor shall take every precaution to avoid excessive build up of inorganic zinc paint
especially on structural beams and column, angle, or complex steel shapes. Inorganic zinc
primer shall be mist coated prior to application of the specified finish coat at required dry film
thickness. The mist coat application shall be performed as recommended by the coating manufacturer
Machined surface coating
Exposed machined metal surface, such as shaft ends, base plate mounting surfaces,
raised flange faces, threaded fittings, etc. shall not be coated. These surfaces shall be
protected for shipment with solvent cutback asphalt or wax based grease preservatives,
which can be easily removed at site. Rust preventative such as Tectyl 506 or other
owner prior approved equivalent are acceptable.
Check continuously the following coating defects and take immediate corrective action ;
▶Loss of adhesion ▶Blistering
▶Peeling ▶Mud-cracking
▶Rusting of substrate ▶Over-spray
▶Runs and Sags ▶Embedded particles
▶Other imperfections and blemishes
