You visited the Falls of Iguazu from the comfort of your own home.

A Little Bit of Mid-Sixties HistoryA Little Bit of Mid-Sixties History

During a business trip through South America, I planned my trip schedule to Sao Paulo, Brazil for a weekend trip down to the Falls of Iguazu. We boarded a DC-3 early Saturday morning with a load of Brazilians and a couple from Hawaii. It was a nice flight until we entered the rain a few minutes north of Iguazu. The pilot cheerfully announced that the small rain storm was delaying us a short while and he was landing at Cascabel.

Forever to be remembered as Rattle Snake Junction, the red clay air strip served a one dirt street town reminiscent of a John Wayne western movie set. A local school bus carried us to the hotel, a wooden, one story building on stilts, with a communal outhouse and two shower stalls on the back porch. The dining room was a long table seating twenty people.

The owner welcomed us with a local rum-lemon drink in a large glass that was passed from person to person, around and around the table. All eyes were on the Americans who passed the test by drinking with the rest. It rained, and rained, and rained Saturday, Saturday night, Sunday, and finally started to clear early Monday morning.

We boarded the DC-3 on Monday morning for the return trip to Sao Paulo. I never saw the Falls until this presentation. Al Hodges
