• All of these layers are regularly updated using Support Packages; that is, errors are corrected and new functions are provided using Support Packages

How SAP R/3 Enterprise was Build

• SAP R/3 Enterprise still contains all SAP standard functionality.SAP R/3 Enterprise is a 4.7 system,with certain new functions than 4.6C

• In future releases of SAP R/3 Enterprise, new functionality will only be shipped within SAP R/3 Enterprise Extensions

• Generally, Extensions are free of charge

SAP new Release Strategy

• There are no more A and B releases. A customer can go productive with the solution without upgrading to a further release. Therefore the shipped solutions are called “ready for productive use”

• A customer simply needs to implement Support Packages and no longer an upgrade

• Compared to SAP R/3 Enterprise, in SAP ECC there are architectural changes with respect to Enterprise Services Architecture, enhanced usability and new developed functionality, like the new general ledger

• SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Strategic Enterprise Management, and Internet Transaction Server integrated into SAP ECC

• Customers have the option to run these components on the same instance that runs SAP ECC (SAP BW and SAP SEM only on a project basis) to reduce the system landscape and safe costs

• Running the components on separate instances is possible as well
