A goal of this workshop is to build a research

community

If you need satellite data for your research

I can get the data for you

I can put in the format that is most helpful

LEO Low Earth Orbit

Altitude of 160 - 2000 km

90 minutes per orbit

16 orbits per day

1st achieved in 1957 (Sputnik)

Space Station 330 km

NASA A-train 690 km

8,500 objects > 10 cm are tracked

MEO Medium Earth Orbit

2000 – 36,000 km

Examples: GPS (global positioning satellites)

GEO Geostationary Thank you Arthur C. Clarke ! (1945)

Altitude of 35,786 km

24 hours per orbit

Hovers over the equator

1st achieved in 1964

Most satellite data is from LEO orbits in precessing (local time

sampling varies) or sun-synchronus (same local times are observed)

DAACs (Distributed Active Data Centers)

Atmospheric Data

True Color Images from MODIS

How to Get True Color Image

http://ladsweb.nascom.nasa.gov/data/search.html

Click on Aqua Modis and select Aqua Level 1 Products

Click on Level 1B calibrated radiances – 1 km

Selct day(s) to look at type in selection of one day

Click on Latitude/Longitude and draw boxed region of interest

Select “Day Only”

Go to bottom of page and Click on “Search” button

Will see a new page

Click on “View RGB” in right hand column

Will see a true color image of the region of interest of the 5 minute granule

Will see a calendar. Click on day of interest. Will see

day and night orbits. Click on panel of interest.

Examples:

Look at August 1, 2010 (look over Antarctica for PSCs)

Look at May 18, 2007 (look over India for aerosol height)

One can prepare maps and download data easily for many

NASA satellite experiments using the NASA Giovanni web site

http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/giovanni/overview

Try it !

Specify the satellite experiment, latitude-longitude, time period

Get a graph (e.g. png) very quickly, see it on your laptop

Get an ascii or netCDF file of the data very quickly

You will like it!
