SBOA PUBLIC SCHOOL ERNAKULAM
REPORT OF ACTIVITIES IN CONNECTION WITH MOSQUITO ERADICATION
June:Mosquito menace is a pertinent problem of the people of Kochi. Waterlogging and garbage
dumps give breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes not only disturb our sleep but also
bring harmful diseases like Malaria and Dengue. Mosquito breeding can be curtailed to a great
extent by creating awareness among. In June with the Monsoon setting in Dengue was spreading
fast and something had to be done to curb the speed at which it was spreading. As a part of our
School‟s Vision 30 program, we wanted to create health and wellness in the neighborhood and so
the students and teachers of SBOA decided to help the neighborhood houses keep themselves
away from the mosquitoes. We prepared a time tested solution that could be used to repel the
mosquitoes – A decoction of tobacco, lime and soap. We bottled the same and distributed the
same in the neighborhood. The solution had to be poured around their houses to keep the
mosquitoes at bay. The campaign was so effective that we got requests for few more bottles of
the solution which we happily provided. We also created awareness as to how they can prevent
breeding of mosquitoes around their houses.
November: SBOA joined hands with EXNORA and set on a Mission to eradicate mosquitoes
under the able leadership of our Secretary and Correspondent, Mr. Thomas Franco Rajendra
Dev. They inaugurated the Mosquito eradication program with a bang. All the SBOA schools
outside Chennai were given a link to watch the program live. Our students watched the program
live via the link. Many illustrious people including actor AlluArjun addressed the students. The
program gave our students inspiration to be part of a mega initiative taken by our Management.
Our students listed 10 steps to eradicate mosquitoes which they gathered from the speakers
during the program. A team of 100 students with teachers visited Rajeev Nagar, a neighboring
residential area and went house to house and spread awareness about eradication of mosquitoes.
They reminded each family about their responsibilities towards mosquito eradication. We
distributed stickers to each house which read – “I take steps to keep my home free of mosquitoes.
Why don‟t you too?” The same stickers were distributed to all our students, two each. They
were asked to paste the sticker in their homes and take steps to eradicate mosquitoes around their
house and also to educate one neighbor about the 10 points to eradicate mosquitoes and present a
sticker to them. Our Students and Teachers visited LMCC school in Pachalam and visited every
class and demonstrated the ten steps to eradicate mosquitoes. Each of the students of that School
also was given a sticker. The campaign against mosquitoes was a great success as we could build
responsibility in our students to take all measures to eradicate mosquitoes.
