Unit Two Review Attend live seminar or complete seminar Option 2 Read Chapter 2: Where Do We Come from and Where Do
We Fit Respond to discussion question: Where Do We Fit?
Be sure to respond to the topic and respond to your classmates throughout the week
Set up Experiment and Complete this week's project: Air Pollution Assessment
Complete Unit 2 self-assessment.
Key Terms• Natural Selection: A natural process that favors
individuals better adapted to the environment, ensuring those traits are passed to the next generation. (Ireland, 2011.)
• Adaptation: the action of being adapted. [Adapting: Make (something) suitable for a new use or purpose; modify. Become adjusted to new conditions.] (Merriam Webster dictionary, 2011.)
• Survival: the act or fact of living or continuing longer than another person or thing. The continuation of life or existence. (Merriam Webster dictionary, 2011.) In this class, we’ll consider survival as the ability of a species to “survive” or prevent extinction.
Where do we come from?• What is the name of our species?• We share a common ancestor with other primates.
What are primates?
• What are primates?– Mammals with flexible hands and feet, eyes that look
forward and enlarged brains. • What are the characteristics that we’ll discuss?
– An upright bipedal stance (Bipedalism)– Opposable thumb– Large brain – Capacity for complex speech communication.
Bipedalism• What does this mean?• Why do you think this was beneficial?

Advantages of Bipedalism
1. Locomotor Efficiency
2. Thermoregulation– Walking upright provides the individual with less
area of the body exposed to sunlight and increased exposure to cooling winds.
3. Hands can be used for something else
4. Postural Feeding
Opposable Thumbs• What does this mean?• Why do you think this was beneficial?

• Large Brain• What does this mean?• What are the benefits?• Can you think of disadvantages of having a large brain?
Images: Microsoft Clip Art
Complex Communication & Social Interaction• What does this mean?• Why is this beneficial?
Sexual Dimorphism• What does this mean?• Why is this beneficial?• What are the disadvantages?

Lab Project Two
• Objective:– Learn how to develop a hypothesis, set up an
experiment, collect and analyze data and reach a conclusion.
– Assess atmospheric pollution in your area. • Materials/Methods:
– PowerPoint in DocSharing showing ideas on how to set up filter, where to put it, how to hang it, how to tack it to trees, and so forth
• This is a FOUR-WEEK project so you MUST start this week.
Where do I put it?
But what if I live in a windy area?
Unit Two – What is Due?
• Hypothesis – Formalized Hypothesis due Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
• See document in DocSharing about how to write a Formalized Hypothesis
• First week of observations in Data Chart– Control should be the first row (observations as soon as
the filter was set up.
– Then make observations every other day and record these.
Example of a Data Chart
Date/Time Temp (°F)
Description of Weather
Condition of Filter Items on Filter
Additional Comments
Unit Three Preview• Reading
– Chapter 3: The Chemistry of Life• Discussion Board:
– Am I radioactive?• Seminar
– Acid Raid and Its Effect on biological systems• Self Assessment• Project
– No Submissions. Continue daily observation of filter, making notes of date, temperature, weather conditions, and any changes to filter. Take digital photos if possible
