DEFINITION

Disorder with a range of symptoms involving disturbances in content of thought, form of thought perception, sense of self, motivation, behavior, and interpersonal functioning.”

ASSOCIATED FEATURESBleuler’s Four A’s

1. Association- thought disorder, as might be evident through rambling and incoherent speech.

2. Affect- disorder of the experience and expression of emotion for example, inappropriate laughter in a sad situation

3. Ambivalence- the inability to make or follow through on decision

4. Autism- tendency to maintain an idiosyncratic style of egocentric thought and behavior.

SYMPTOMS

Delusions

Hallucinations

Disorganized speech

Disturbed or catatonic behavior

Negative symptoms, such as flat affect or severe lack of motivation

ETIOLOGY

The causes are not yet known, but researches feel that it has to do with genetics and ones environment.

A history of taking hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD or amphetamine

This can cause problems with the development of the brain.

Prevalence

It affects 1 percent of the adult population , around 1.8 million have the disorder.

PROGNOSIS

There is no cure for the illness, however there is medication that helps control the symptoms.

They are not really aware of what cause the illness so it is very difficult to find a cure.

People with this illness are not usually socially accept
