Summary
• Data centers / IT are likely to spend the most on electricity in a year.
• A larger proportion of those managing larger buildings are using energy management systems
• System data storage is the biggest concern around remote diagnostics while the level of investment required acts as a barrier to adopting Big Data solutions.
• Capital expenditure budgets are set to increase for 2016, compared to 2015. Over a fifth anticipate an increase of 10%+.

Majority have final say in facility decisions• An online survey was conducted with decision makers in Facilities
Management and Maintenance across the US.
• Over half (57%) make all of the final facility maintenance outsourcing decisions, while the remaining make the decisions or have influence over decisions to some extent. Respondents have a variety of responsibilities and years of industry experience:

Data centers / IT institutions spend the most on electricity • Data centers / IT institutions and industrial buildings are the biggest spenders in terms of electricity per
year (18% spend over $500,001). Those in Industrial building have the largest annual budget for building operating expenses (20% with budget of $500,001+)

Level of investment acts as a barrier to Big Data solutionsLevel of investment and lack of resources act as the biggest barriers to the adoption of big data solutions and analytics. However, those who cite lack of resource available are also likely to project the capital expenditure budget for 2016 increase so this may no longer pose as a barrier in the future.

Bigger buildings are likely to use energy management systemsTypically, energy management systems are used in bigger buildings. Smaller buildings might not be able to utilise such systems to their full potential. Similarly, newer buildings (less that 12 years old) are more likely to use energy management systems as opposed to older buildings.

Interesting that the relationship between size and usage is so
linear. Why aren’t smaller buildings using EMS? Would it pay to install? Is is just for
large buildings

Over 40% across all areas want predictive risk information portal, while roughly a fifth for all areas.
Typically those with no interest in the predictive risk information portal tend to be those with smaller budgets and spending on electricity and those managing smaller buildings (<100k sq. ft.).

Access control is the most widely used state systemAccess control is currently the most popular future state system while perform automated equipment fault detection is the system most people will adopt in the next three years (most likely through remote service). In cloud platforms are likely to be used for BAS/BMS and HVAC, and mobile app / access is most likely to be used for lighting controls. It is unclear whether those who responded ‘none of these’ did so because they are not interested or because they already have those services.
. Please indicate which building systems will be part of an integrated platform for planning and/or control purposes in the next 3 years. Please also indicate if you anticipate remote third party services and/or mobile access will be included for operational/repair purposes

Information from previously used vendors is heavily relied uponInformation and recommendations from vendors that have previously been used is heavily relied on when thinking about emerging trends and facility service providers / solutions, this is especially true of those with larger budgets for operating expenses and those who spend the most on electricity in a year. Recommendations and information from the community are relied with the exception of those with more industry experience, who are likely to have developed a network of valuable connections in the industry.

A knowledgeable sales rep is an important info. sourceA knowledgeable sales / factory equipment representative is the most important sources when evaluating a vendors operating, followed by industry website / magazine publication and customer testimonials.
Typically social media is a less important source and the least frequently used. However, roughly a quarter those with 7 – 10 years of experience rate LinkedIn article / community as the most important source. Again, this may be because they have developed a network of connections and they value their thoughts and opinions.
