About the Speaker
E. Frank Tupper is one of the founding faculty of the School of Divinity and teaches courses in theology. He received his Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Tupper is noted for his books, The Theology of Wolfhart Pannenberg and A Scandalous Providence: The Jesus Story of the Compassion of God. The latter, published in 1995, reflects more than fifteen years of academic research, theological reflection, and the biographical pondering into a narrative rendering of the providence of God. He began his distinguished career in 1973 teaching theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1997 he arrived at Wake Forest University as a visiting professor in the Department of Religion. Tupper is an ordained Baptist minister.

About the Pentecost Vigil
Tonight’s Hooding Ceremony falls on Pentecost Eve. Tomorrow, Sunday, May 19, is Pentecost Sunday in the Christian tradition. On Pentecost Sunday, Christians across the globe remember Jesus’ promise that God would send us “another Advocate”; we celebrate God’s gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecostal fires are lit as Easter’s fifty days come to an end. In some traditions, the flame of the Easter candle is extinguished in a worship service on Pentecost Eve as worshippers promise to carry God’s fire into the world through the ways they live their lives. Tonight, as the sun sets and moon rises, the Pentecost season of wind and fire begins. The sun also sets tonight on the three-year academic journeys of these members of the Class of 2013. We honor and affirm these graduates by keeping vigil with them on this Pentecost Eve, waiting and watching along with them for the new thing God will do in their lives in the days, weeks, and years ahead.
