PUPILS at Soyisile PrimarySchool in Khayelitsha wereoverjoyed as water gushedfrom their newly installedborehole yesterday.

They were asked to bringwater from home as theschool shuts its taps dur-ing the day due to the waterrestrictions.

Yesterday, however, humani-tarian organisation Gift of theGivers for the first time openedthe borehole which it helpedinstall to assist the school,as well as neighbouring Sos-ebenza Primary School andMatthew Goniwe MemorialHigh School, through pipelines.

The no-fee school, with 1 240pupils, had a R13 000 monthlywater bill, according to Soyis-ile Primary principal MongeziTshikila.

"We ask our learners tobring water from home aswe close our taps during theday, but many forget and thetaps have to stay on because ourchildren must have water.

"Gift of the Givers cameto us with this blessing andwe are happy and so thankful

to them and their donors,"said Tshikila.

He said parents of the pupilshad taken the responsibilityof managing this resourceand ensuring it does not getabused.

Gift of the Givers has com-mitted itself through variousplanned interventions, includ-ing the collection of 5-litrebottles of water at more than70collection points throughoutSouth Africa.

Earlier this week the organi-sation donated more than 17000b-litre bottles of water to thedrought-strick en Drakensteinregion.

The organisation receivedcalls daily from care facilities,schools and drought-hit areasfor their assistance, said Gift of

"Similar boreholes have

been installed at facilities andschools across the province andwe will be going to drought-stricken areas like De Doorns,Touws River and Vredendal,"said Sablay

He said another Khayelitshaschool would also receive aborehole soon.

Borehole site manager Hein-

rich Erasmus said the drillingstarted on Monday and con-cluded quickly due to the soil.

He said early testing indi-cated that the borehole willproduce about 24 000 litres perhour, making up to about 70 000litres a day.

He said they would test thequality of the water as well as

social investment managerMymoena Mooradd said theretail giant had approachedthe provincial Depar tment ofEducation, hoping to assistchildren from impoverishedareas in the province.

They have provided funding

of R1.5 million for the boreholeproject in the region, with Giftof the Givers installing fourboreholes at schools like Soyi-sile Primary and other projects.
