PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL STUDENTS
UNDER ROSHNI PROJECT IN ERNAKULAM
Introduction
ROSHNI project aims at the educational development of migrant workers’ children in
Ernakulum District. The project is implemented in 20 selected schools across the district.
For the performance analysis, data was collected from the above mentioned 20 schools. To
measure the performance, two sets of data were collected- one at the start of the academic
year before implementing the project at the schools and second after 6 months of
implementing the program. The data was taken as two sets- one from LP section and second
from UP section. The proficiency was categorised as two- complete and partial. Further, the
BMI (Body Mass Index) was also calculated before and after implementing the program
since project included providing breakfast to these children.
Flow of analysis
The analysis is divided into two parts- Part 1 compares the proficiency, and BMI before
implementing Roshni and after implementation taking a span of 6 months. Part 2 takes the
terminal exam into consideration and compares the performance of the students thus
ascertaining the success of the Roshni program in improving their academic performance.

Analysis
Part 1: The proficiency of the students are compared with before implementing the program
and after implementing the program taking a span of 6 months. The proficiency is measured
as partial proficiency and complete proficiency for both LP & UP schools. Further the BMI is
compared.

It can be seen from Figure 1 and Figure 2 that for both LP as well as UP, the complete
proficiency has increased while the partial proficiency has decreased over the 6 months.

Figure 3: Percentage increase in BMI
Figure 3 reveals that there is a small increase in the average BMI for 20 schools. Since the
data is only for 6 months duration, a drastic increase cannot be expected. But due to
providing breakfast, there is a small increase in the average BMI , which is a positive sign

The mean attendance of students in 20 schools is 85.9%. It is evident from the chart that all
the schools have a good percentage attendance. This can be attributed to the classes as well as
the breakfast provided. Further, the proficiency can also be seen to be increased due to this
stable attendance.
Part 2: Analysing the academic performance in the terminal exam
ROSHNI project educated the students off the class hours. The objective of the program is to
make at par the students of this program with the rest of their classmate, by improving their
proficiency in Malayalam language as the medium of instruction is Malayalam in these schools.
Hence, the analysis of the performance of these students in their terminal exams becomes
mandatory to measure the success of the project. The performance of these students in the
terminal exams are taken and consolidated for this purpose.
For analysis, the two sections LP & UP are handled separately.
Section A shows the analysis of LP schools and Section B shows that of UP schools
SECTION A - LP Section
ROSHNI: Pretest June-July 2018 and Terminal Exam Dec 2018 Grade Consolidation
Performance A B C D
Pretest - LP (% of students who scored the
grade) 5.18 18.32 22.26 54.12
Terminal Examination - LP (% of students who
scored the grade) 26.10 39.56 20.41 13.90
Table 1: Grade consolidation of LP section

Figure 5: Grade consolidation – pre-test and terminal exam
Major improvement shown in the grades A and D , as the students who were scoring D
grades have drastically dropped from 54 % to 14 % whereas as it can be seen with A grade
scoring pattern has improved from meagre 5 % to 26 % . There is almost 50% increase in the
performance of students scoring B grade, though students scoring grade C the change is not
substantial.
On a school wise performance analysis of the School under the ROSHNI Project we find
the following trends depicted in graphs below. The figures below denotes separately the
grades A, B, C & D scored by students

Figure 8: Consolidation of Grade C across the schools
Figure 9: Consolidation of Grade D across the schools
From figures 6, 7, 8 & 9 it can be seen that the percentage of students scoring grades A&
B have increased in the terminal exam when compared with that of pretest and the
percentage of students scoring Grades C& D have come down. This can be attributed to
the success of the implementation of ROSHNI

On a school wise performance analysis of the School under the ROSHNI Project in the Upper
Primary Sections, we find the following trends depicted in graphs below. In most of the schools
improvements in A and B grades and drastic reduction in D grades can be seen clearly.

Conclusion
As mentioned earlier the ROSHNI project has their volunteers training the students using
Code Switching Techniques to increase their proficiency in Malayalam. The project also
provides breakfast for these students. The results of the analysis clearly supports the success
of the implementation of the project. The proficiency of the students in handling Malayalam-
reading, writing, speaking and understanding has increased considerably. This has reflected
in their performance in the terminal exams too. The attendance of these students is seen to be
high and stable another indicator of the success of the ROSHNI as it has been proven that
students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently.
