Under Guidance of –
Prof. Dr. Rajendra.R. Deshpande, INDIA
After the warm up ,
sitting & gentle stretching will
be good for idle muscles.
Twisting postures like
Parivritta-swastika-asana OR
Adhomukha-Swastika-asana
Sitting twists - also can be
done in Vira-asana OR on
chair.
(5 to 7 minutes)
Necessary - know which side turning is difficult. And then practice more on that weaker side.

Asymmetrical Poses
Half-way Jaanushirsha-asana, Half-way Gomukha-asana(Hands),
Ardha-Matsyendra-asana (gradually starting from soft pose).
These give us the awareness about
un-equilibrium between Rt. & Lt. halves of body.
‘Being aware of imbalance’ will be the first step.
(10 minutes)

SYMMETRICAL POSES Vajra-asana/Veera-asana- gives good support to base Pelvis) to hold spine & Para-spinal structures in erect position. One can use brick support if allowed. Adhomukha-Vira-asana OR Shashanka-asana- Bhek-asana- stretch thigh muscles & lower abdomen muscles.(ilio-psoas training)
(10 minutes)

Marajar-asana - make spine + para-spinal structures supple.
(3 to 5 minutes)

Again the asymmetrical poses for stretching the weaker side. Both sides stretching is necessary, as, the musculoskeletal system needs to be trained. Parigha-asana, Bharadwaj-asana by wall, Ek-Paad/Parivritta janu shirsha-asana. Pashchim-uttana-asana(Soft). (7 minutes)

Relax Spine by Pawan-mukta-asana
The lower back region when touches down, the muscles get a good break from functioning.
Pelvis, Low back & whole para-spinal structures get aligned without any pressure.
Pawan-mukta followed by Vakra-asana helps to regain balance in hips, pelvis & back.
If one does it at morning, immediately after waking up, helps a lot .

If you use props/supports then – Poses like Supta Padangushtha asana,Pashim Uttana asana & Supportaed Uttana asana can be practiced. (Scoliosis is tested by forward bend. If same bend is given with support, then muscles & Spine get rest as well as re-arrangement.) (7 to 10 minutes)

Advance stage postures
If your method & policies
allow, then advance
postures with Props like
Viparita Dandasana (on

Shwanasana, can be
practiced.

YES ; NO ; MAY BE We tell patients to do frequently at home.
THESE ARE THE UNIVERSAL NECK EXERCISES
KNOWN TO ALL OF US.
WHICH ARE CALLED AS BRAHMAMUDRA IN
SOME SCHOOLS OF YOG.
THESE STRENGTHEN THE UPPER SPINAL &
SHOULDER GIRDLE MUSCULSTURE.
Movements should be slow enough to stretch
muscles .
Person has to be aware that the shoulders
should not be lifted in any of the movements. Dr. Shirish Deshpande YOGA

Kindly give couple of minutes more-
VERY IMPORTANT-
Yoga postures followed blindly may be hazardous .
In next ppt s, logic behind these postures is given, so that you
can judge why the posture is been suggested.

By this program , we try to achieve all the ‘body-planes’ as they are. Memory of ‘balanced planes’ is there in brain; we need to tap/stimulate it.

The wrong pose like Scoliosis - pose is many a times
adapted pose due to recurrent wrong sitting, standing,
sleeping etc.
Imbalance by birth/by accident is difficult to
manage…but certainly not impossible to manage.

Asymmetry judged Clinically.
Here medial border & inferior
angle of shoulder blades are
marked .
Rt. Shoulder blade (Scapula)
has moved away from
central plane of Spine.

Everyone uses one side more. So other side which is used less becomes weaker. The muscles on unused / less used side get tighter day by day.
Shoulder girdle & Pelvic girdle attachments are necessary to be examined .These groups are real culprits.
SPACE factor is disturbed in thses musculatures. We need to re-arrange the Space & the matter in that Space(musculo-skeletal sys.)
Contracted muscles act like Bow-Strings ; & from outside it appears like bent or leaned body on one side.

Why body adapts-
It happens because of what we call - COIN
THEORY - .
If we place lower coins … a little to right …..
…then the upper coins should be placed …a
little left….
…then & then only ..the whole building of
coins can be balanced…!
IN THE SAME WAY BODY-NATURE TRIES TO
BALANCE BY ADJUSTMENT.

BAD POSE ADAPTATION it makes the thing worst…! We see the leaning spine on one side…! We see the tilted pelvis…! There is something else happening with pelvis….! Its not only raised up from one side; but also , the Pelvis + Hip twist ; turn-in-front from one side . Ilio-psoas, Dr. Shirish Deshpande YOGA

The skeleton turns ; so the body looks turned & twisted. Skeleton is controlled by Muscles attached to it.
The important muscles
1) Shoulder girdle – Rhomboids, Tares Muscles, Quadrates lumborum ,
Latissimus dorsi.
2) Pelvic girdle – Quadrates lumborum, Oblique muscles, Iliopsoas.
These muscles need to be trained & re-arranged.(to be stretched more on contracted side)
These are like strings of a Dhanushya.

What exactly you/ me/ we all do in Yoga
Move the spine in every which way (forward, back, lateral, twist,
vertical) underutilized in rehab programs
Coordinate spinal and other movements with adaptive breathing (underutilized in rehab programs)
Facilitate strengthening exercises
Progress from “passive” asanas to more “active” as the condition improves, which is a unique feature.
“The practice of Pranayam facilitates better percolation of
oxygen into the lungs”& in turn helping to breath normally
during “Crisis Time” also. Dr. Shirish Deshpande YOGA

KNOW WHERE IT WENT WRONG ! & WHAT TO DO FOR IT?
If this imbalance of ‘weakness & Strength’ crosses the limit, then body adapts this ‘change in day to day posture’. The muscles get arranged in the changed/bad gait.
Only thing we do is to correlate Yoga Pose with this deviated anatomy. This principle can be called as “Counter Stretching”. (For example;- if the left-side-pelvis has came up….then to counter that, he/she needs to stretch it by bending on right side…by anchoring the pelvis.)
If this ‘counter stretching’ is hammered (sorry to use that word) on Client’s brain, then the person will practice poses with understanding .
Generally speaking, you cannot know what is right, if you have not felt what is wrong.

UNDERSTOOD A POSE?,,, THEN APPLY IT IN EVERYDAY LIFE -
If client applies this “Counter-Pose-memory” for day-today positions, …then automatically he starts “good – pose adaptation” .
This helps outside the Yoga-hall too.
In fact the Client will remember us & the things told by us, if told with logic.
So 1 or 2 hrs of Yoga-Pose-practice will be beneficial for remaining 22 or 23 hrs.

Therapy is based on dimensions of a Yogasana.
Every logical Yog-posture has -
an anchoring point & stretching axis
(a fixed point & direction to stretch).
WE (decider) NEED TO ANALYZE -
….in which direction / in which dimension ,
we should stretch the muscles.

I believe that every Posture we prescribe, should have logical explanation.
There are many other postures which are beneficial to handle the scoliosis. I found these as applicable for everyone (may be with little modifications).
