Types of SearchKnown Item Search - searcher knows item is available; uses known info to retrieve it (e.g. author/title etc.).

Unknown Item Search – searcher is unaware/not looking for specific item; uses various terms & synonyms according to his/her info needs (e.g. subject search)

Free-text Search – a.k.a. ‘Basic Search’; usually several fields searched concurrently (e.g. title, author, subject, keywords, etc.). Simple BUT tends to retrieve many irrelevant items
